PLEASE GO TO THE ABOVE THREAD AND READ ABOUT SUSPENSION TRAUMA - A PERSON HANGING IN A SAFETY HARNESS CAN BECOME UNSCONSIOUS IN AS LITTLE AS 6 MINUTES WITH DEATH FOLLOWING

I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS SUBJECT ON HUNTING FOURMS AND FEEL THAT I SHOULD BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION

A SAFETY HARNESS IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR HUNTING OUT OF A TREE STAND BUT YOU NEED TO HAVE A PLAN AND SYSTEM TO GET BACK TO THE GROUND AFTER THE FALL...... ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE THAT USE CLIMBING STANDS AND DO NOT HAVE ANY KIND OF STEPS ATTACHED TO THE TREE

PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE

take care

What if you had the first one and criss corssed the straps like the other? Wouldnt that create some kind of basket for your but??

I am talking about the two types of vest that you put on here CAL.
good question i don't have the answer... I'm trying to picture it in my head... but I would think if you crossed the straps you would have to pull them so very tight to insure they dont slip up your crack or slip on your no nos causing major injury and discomfort... having to pull them that tight would make it not worth it.. I have a hunter safty system.. so if someone has a regular harness could try it
I have a hunter safety system too which is pretty much the same as the ameristep safety vest. almost identical.

there will be no...no no pinching going on!! ahahahahha i will take my chances.
great videos... that's a different hunters safty system then i got.. mine has added straps that makes it a seat of the pants type

Well what about after the fall - would have liked to see that dem guy try and get back into his stand or on the ground - thats the problem

Getting back in the tree or on the ground of course.... but it shows what is more comfortable... getting back to the stand or on the ground would be so much easier if you are comfortable and uninjured... if it is causing you to be uncomfortable or putting pressure on you .. you're going to have a rougher time getting back in stand ... We keep referring to the men that have lost there lives this year as a hanging. I believe these men didnt hang at all, they died of suspension trauma. This is something that anyone using a safety harness should be concerned about. Below is a link that anyone using a safety harness should read!

now this question mus be asked...is the vest harnesses safer...inquirin mine wants to know...anybuddy know...
Excellent post!

This is exactly what geezer has been saying for two years... He also pointed out that a strap and/or strap and rope fall arrest can suffocate you, which is essentially hanging yourself. This can happen very easily if you wear a strap or rope around your chest/waist; worn under your arms may not suffocate you but it will sure as heck hurt.

You always need an escape/emergency plan when you climb, so why not make it safer and more comfortable if you do slip off your steps or heaven forbid...out of your stand. Spend the money is the lesson...with the current economy, I'm worth as much alive as I am dead...:D

I thought this link should be a sticky...thanks Phil.
I'll hang in the harness a bit figuring out the next course of action, vs splatting my arse all over the woods after falling 15 or so feet!

Like 56 said...who wants to drop 20 feet...if you're saying the knife as your last option, well I always try to have a knife handy; but it should not get to that...:nono: Listen to what geezer's been tryin to tell ya...dang :D

no i ain sayin that,i been there jus las yr...i didnt git hurt an i didnt have a knife but i was able to reach up an unhook the snap from the rope put muh legs aroun the tree an shinny on down...i also was able to bring down the seat section...the base was kicked off to the groun after comin unhooked from tree...now i ain hangin roun if i doan have too,a knife is reccomended to have in some thangs i read bout this...think bout it if for some reason i couldnt git to the snap...prest cut the strap with legs roun the tree an one han holden the seat or tree...gotta have a cool head when thangs like this happens...now if yuh got a broken back or knocked out...thas different but any many cases youre prolly gonna be ok jus hangin there so git down by climbin down...in all my yrs climbin i've had tuh shinny down a tree twice...both because i lost the base...it ain that hard unless of course you neva clumb trees as a kid like me...:D
I lost the base once....when I was in my early20's...when I still had a lot of youth in my arms and legs.....now it's minimal...but it will give me time to think of my next move, while I'm hanging there. I always have a knife with me in the woods.....came in handy a few times over the years! The belt ones from years ago are crap...I don't know why I even used them for a few years.

I got rid of those and used a loggers harness for the last 15 years, and then went to the Hunter Safety Systems recently.

I actually tested mine in the yard, and realized them straps around your family jewels can get your voice up a few notches pretty quick...so I make sure they are fairly snug and in the right place...that's a tad important....I'm not planning on having kids anymore, so it may not be that important anyway!!!

Hanging in the harness was fine for over 5 minutes, and I didn't have any issue....but again, I didn't fall. Get out in a tree in the yard a few feet off the ground...and try them, you'll be able to gauge what your dealing with, if it does happen.

like tuh here more bout the vest...wendy wants tuh hunt from a tree stand and i am thinkin bout the vest for her...i will prolly try it out an see if i want one too...i have seen much better lookin vests out there since the first ones...of course they cost more but are built better...
There are a lot of different vest out there and they do vary in price. I checked several of them out and it looks like most of them now a days are designed to "help" protect you from Suspension Trauma. This is one item that personally I would stay away from the cheapest one's.

I read several post above where people talk about losing the base to their climbers. This happened to me once. Now I strap them together before I start climbing. Amazing what I learn when I watch the video that comes with the stand. ;)
How are people loosing the base of there climbers. Im using a summit and have never had a problem(yet). That would be a drag if it did.
Not using my head is how I lost mine. First time I used it tried it out at a buddies house. Latched on the base too level at the base of the tree. As I climbed up of course the tree got more narrow and before I knew it there it goes. My buddy was laughing so hard he couldn't get the ladder to get me out of the tree for a while. I got to return the favor the next year when he bought his climber and forgot all about strapping it together and did not start it at enough of an angle. Needless to say I did not remind him.

I was getting the ladder for him after I quit making fun of him.
Always tie the two parts of your climbing stands together, you will never lose the bottom again. I have mine tied together with a 3.5 ft rope, which is about the length of steps I take when going up and down. That way, just in case something happens it will still be there for me to pull up or get my feet on.

Bought the Hunter Safety Systems vest this season. I really like it. Another little safty feature they added I liked is a deer drag / safty strap. Keep it in your vest pocket at all times. They put a snap in the back of the vest used for dragging, also for holding your weight if you ever need it. The strap has a built in loop in one end. If you do happin to fall, you snap the strap to your vest and get your get your foot thru the loop an use it like a stirrup. Standing in it, you are then transferring your weight to your vest, takin the stress off your leg straps.
They are a little pricy, but well worth the money in my book.
I don't know if I would practice falling in it. The bevels in the strap are design to help slow the fall. Once there popped, they suggest replacing the vest. Why wouldn't ya. If it save your azz once, it's all ready paid for itself, ten fold.

If anyone doesn't have a harness an needs one. Shoot me a PM an I'll give you one. I think I have 2 left.
