saugeye eggs?

  1. I was fishing today for saugeye but didn't catch any, however a guy there way kind enough to give me one he caught. I have two questions. 1 st. has anyone eaten an egg sack from a saugeye, I know guys that do from bass, pike and panfish. They say they are a real richy fish flavor. 2nd. I know bass can have eggs any given time off the year and I was wondering if saugeye would be the same. This egg sacks were as big around as a quarter and about 4-5 inches long.

    For any interested the stomach contents contained one inch long shad and an assorted mess of digested bits and pieces I couldn't make out. She wasn't full by any means but she was eating.

  2. The fish was great as usuall and the eggs were eaten by my dog. I couldn't handle the little round things in my mouth and they tasted to fishy for me, very rich. They take alot longer to cook than fillets do too.

  5. Dam, now that is a slam. It was tough telling the kids that someone gave it to me cuz I am too pathetic to catch my own. You can have the eggs next time, I'll freeze them for ya. lol

  6. The only eggs I have eaten were from catfish, smallish bullheads, that were scrambled in chicken eggs and were infact very good with a very slight touch of fish taste.

    I also enjoy making butterfly fillets out of panfish by not cutting thru the belly skin thus creating one fillet out of one fish. I scale the fish then fillet. I cook by placing skin down in a pan with butter then season the top with salt+pepper. As the fish starts to run white on the top I'll bust an egg into each part of the fillet then season the egg with salt+pepper. When the egg is ready to flip go ahead and try to flip it all at once sometimes needing two spatulas to turn. When the egg is done to your liking the fish is done also. With hash browns this meal is fit for a king.
