13:39:09 ICE FISHING
Hi Ray, fished the lake on monday and tuesday. We fished cranberry and long island. I saw 1 saugeye and a handfull of crappie and gills at cranberry. long island alot of small gills 1 crappie. out of 60 gills I only had 9 that were keepers. If we get better ice I think we will be able to go where the fish are. As of now the fishing is slow. too thin of ice in the areas I like to fish. The cranberry area was hot but came to a standhill the last 3 days. CYA ON THE ICE SOMETIME JOHN

The ice ranges from 0" to 9". A little water is still running over the spillway so you really need to test as you go. Straight out from the Moundway channel is is still thin. The South Fork at Moundwood is 8" along the shoreline and only 3" in the middle. Report is from the Park Rangers on Thursday Jan. 16, 2003. More info at

18:16:42 FISH LOCATION
Hi Ray, I sure see alot of guys jigging for saugeye this year. Some are catching them too. I'am mainly a panfishing person. So far this has been one of my better years for big gills. Location is the name of the game. If you are in the right spot you will catch some. However if you rig too heavy you will catch alot less. Too many guys just can't seem to down size. 4lb test line is the heaviest you should use. and try your bait at home. Use a bobber that will just float your ice jig. And don't be afraid to fish a foot or more of the bottom at times. Keep your noise to a minimum on the ice. Keep on fresh bait, and always keep your holes free of ice so when you get that bite your bobber can move without being stuck in the ice. I have been ice fishing for over 40 years and hope I have helped someone.

Hi John .. You made a Great Post on how to go about riggin' up for panfish & bein' quite on the shallow bite. It seems like a long time since our 1st ice the first week of Dec & the easy early bite is long gone .. now it is more of a knowin' the location bite for the active fish is how I look at it. I haven't been out for S-Eyes lately, but when I do it will be after dark & by myself .. lookin' for some warmer temps to give it another shot.
Take Care John .. see ya on the ~~~~~
Ray
PS .. I got my bucket down with 7 or 8 P-Fish ice rods in it & never gave it a shot this winter. I just make the rounds & do a few S-Eyes after dark when I think I have a sure thing ~ gettin' old I guess!!!

ditto on the downsizing comments. When I first started ice fishing I would just grap my summer rigs for bluegill and crappie and just put them on shorter icerods. After getting skunked many times I started switching to smaller jigs lighter lines and that has made all the difference. I personally use 2lb test leaders tied onto 4 lb test line to help those tiny ice flies sink with a little more action. I use a vexilar ice flasher and I can tell you that fish snub there noses at big bulky lures when that waters that cold.

last sunday the fishing was pretty good back at blackhawk. just wanted to know if people are still catching fish or has it slowed down with the big cold front that moved through. I also was wondering if anybody has heard of anybody fishing in haborview bay by tacobell and if they ever done any good. thanks, " remember to keep your rod tip out of the hole because it just might freeze off!"
