I am thinking of going Grouse hunting this Saturday down towards Longs retreat and I hear the weather will be warm. Anyone else have any hunts planned for the weekend?

yep Lance, I just enjoy getting out and walking the ole field with my dogs and sons. Where are you planning on hunting this weekend? I mean what county? I am also going to get in on a little public and private land.

Pathetic

Well I got out! I had to cut my time back from the plan but that's the breaks.

My father and I hunted 1 hr Saturday with two dogs we moved two confirmed flushed and had another point that was "non-productive" so I couldn't count it. Not bad for an hr so I got my hopes up a little for Sunday. On Sundayreality hit.... Sunday we again ran two dogs 2 1/4 hrs 0 flushes and no tracks. Went to another spot with one dog for another 30-40 minutes, no flushes one "non-productive" but at least there were lots of tracks. Have to hit that spot again in a couple weeks! Nice to get out with the dogs but it sure would have been nice to get into a few birds especially since I took the land-owner out with me Sunday for his first trip with a dog. maybe next time....

Results Of Grouse Hunting

Well lets start off
Greg & Sons = 0
Grouse = ?
I beleive the Grouse won this weekend. We hunted 8 hours Saturday with just the one dog with a break in the middle of the day in a place 2 weeks ago we had 7 flushes and we never seen a Grouse one on Saturday. Sundays hunt was only 2 hours long with alot of ground covered but no luck still. But I have to say that I had a great day with my sons again and my dog and I seen over 60 wild Turkey in 2 different spots we hunted on Saturday and I also seen 1 big buck with brow tines around 4 inches and I didn't get a good count but from what I could tell he looked to have at least 13 points with 2 good down tines also. And a really nice doe was following him up the ridge. On Sunday we seen quite a few rabbits but no birds. We woke up to a lot of fog both days. I think where we were at the weather being so warm played a major factor in our hunt and seeing Grouse. But we had a great time in Pike county in Latham Ohio for 2 straight days with a log cabin we rented and I took my pup also and worked her in between hunts then at night the dogs layed up close to the fire place and I have to mention my wife and daughter went with us to the cabin and it was so nice to have hot meals cooked when we arrived back at the cabin each time. The lord sure blessed my family this weekend. Can't wait till I have another free day to do it all again.

more grouse NOT

Another 5 hrs in the field this weekend in one of my usually more reliable spots. ZERO flushes and only one set of tracks. This season is killing me, I may or may not hunt the next two weeks just so I don't force any of the few birds that seem to be around into exposing themselves to the avian predators that seem to be everywhere this year. Need to have some birds left to breed. Another hatch like this year and we're in REAL trouble. :(

last day for grouse

Well guys I went yesterday. And all we could scratch up was one. And my friend took it. It wasnt the best of seasons. But it wasnt the worst either. My total for the year was 9 and my friend was 14. I had to miss a whole month. Or it might have been a little better. On a good note was we seen lots of grouse tracks over the last two weeks. And they were at 5 different winter spots. Mother nature sure played heck this year on them. But all the ice from the last storm brought down a lot of trees. So in a couple of years the grouse should go up. The good thing about this season was it was the first time I limited out. And the first time I took a double with two shots. I also noticed the woodcock seemed to be on the decline this year. Last year I was jumping doubles. This year I was lucky to see one. Even though I hardly ever shoot at one . It is still nice to see one. Hope you all the best. steve aka gunner

Hope for good spring!
