I've done this in the past for a few different seasons and wanted to do it through a thread again instead of cluttering the actual blogs.

As many of you have read, this will be the first I will be deer hunting this year due to college. I'm excited. I've hunted muzzleloader season two times before, both with borrowed guns and without luck. Last year I got a Remington Genesis and have shot it in the past couple months over break and am comfortable with it. Open sights, I'd take a shot out to 100 yards. I know the gun can go further that than, but that's what I feel safe with.

I have not been able to do as much scouting this year as I would have hoped to. I've been out to my main piece of woods just three times, twice squirrel hunting and once this past week to look around. I'll probably be going back tomorrow afternoon to take advantage of the snow to look for tracks. I know this piece of woods by the back of the my hand, sometimes there are deer, other times there are not. It's pretty frustrating not knowing who (or how many) have been hunting this piece of woods or how many deer have been in there or have been harvested out of there. Last year during extra gun season I walked into this woods almost as blind and shot a doe on the first day at 2 in the afternoon, thanks to someone pushing it towards me with their missed shots. Here's hopin' for the same kind of luck. However, this year I'm faced with the extra challenge of Riverdude. No, not the actual 'dude' but it might as well be :p ! They are drilling for a well out in the field off one end of the woods. I normally hunt the other end and so I'm hopeful it will have little effect, or if anything, keep the deer on "my" side of the woods. Again, here's hopin' (that's going to be the theme).

(Standard legend: red dots are stand, orange is property line, green is known frequented deer paths)

The next piece that I will be hunting is close to home. I used to hunt this when I was in high school or before I had my driver's license. It's small but can be a haven for deer, depending on the pressure. I stopped by the neighbor's and he has seen a nice buck back there but no one is hunting it. I walked back yesterday (I've seen deer in the field once since I've been home) and saw lots of tracks on the edges of the field. Better than that, I stepped into the woods and quickly bumped 4 doe up. They bumped but didn't spook and I didn't walk through the woods lest run them off. On my return trip past where I've seen them come out and where the tracks where, I surveyed for a spot to sit (I'm thinking I might invest in a blind this week and put it there, not sure yet). Where I put the yellow 'Corn?' is a low spot in the field that has some soybeans missed by the combine. I will probably put some corn out there to add to the natural feeding area.

And finally, the last farm. I don't have permission to hunt it but could with a phone call. The orange part anyways. I was out there for youth season and we saw 11 deer before noon. A guy bowhunting on the other side of the row that morning also saw a few that we didn't. However, no one had any luck there during gun season so I'm not sure. There are some CRP fields that I'll probably get invited to help push, we'll see if it amounts to anything (driving just isn't the same with smoke poles anyways). [This map is also noteworthy because the farm that is adjacent to it that I outlined in blue happens to be the family of the girl that I've been on a few dates with. Needless to say, if things keep going, there's some extra reasoning to keep dating her :16suspect1:]

I think that's all.

Two final thoughts

1) I'm not going to be able to get out this week. I'm doing a week long internship in court and so I'll be tied up during the day (but could be able to put corn out in the mornings or evenings). Stinks but I know I will be pulling at the bit to get out (and will be in the habit of getting up earlier than 11 like I did today )

2) I've invested in some better cold weather clothing to endure four days. My schedule is clear for the four days and I'm planning on hunting every legal hour that I can. For my birthday I got a nice thick double fleece hooded jacket from Cabela's. Thanks to Christmas and a kind soul on this site, I've got a pair of new insulated rubber boots coming in the mail, as well as a new facemask and a new pair of socks. :D (Thanks again)

...

Well, here's hopin'. I will try to update this thread this week as I get out maybe tomorrow afternoon and then perhaps more later in the week. I'll be sure to post daily updates in the evenings. (if I post anything besides "I got one!" during hunting hours the 9-12th, yell at me and tell me to get my lazy butt back out there!)

Sounds like a good plan! And same here i wake up too late ne more. But looks like your better at those satellite images then me hahhaha:whistle:.. And hunting the mornings in this temperature isn't very good. I mean you may see a few. Depending on your area but its better to stay in and stay warm and go out around 12 or so. Deer don't like feeding on beans when they are frozen. and its too cold for them. But from what i've seen in the stand ive only saw one deer in the morning and it wasn't eating just cruzin. but mmost were seen 12 to 1 30 and then they went back in to bed and were back at 4.. So good luck with the area!

Hey Ernie, is that the spot I get to hunt in the 1'st photo marked "Riverdude"? :mischeif: :D

Just kidding, I saw that and could not pass it up.

Good Luck with Dat Smoke Pole this year. :D

It's been a heck of a week!

I've spent the entire week in court and haven't been out besides some scouting on Monday evening. I though I posted about that, but oh well.

I will be hunting the third map in the morning (within the orange section). No sure where yet, I'm going in blind but there should be some deer there.

Here's hopin' I can feel my fingers tomorrow to post about a mature deer...

I do too. It's small (about 14 acres). I LOVED hunting it when all those hedgerows where in the fields, the deer loved those. You can see that this picture was taken after they were pulled and cleared out and put into those piles which were eventually burned. I will probably hit that tomorrow evening, not sure yet.

Day One Recap

Probably one of the best and also most frustrating days of hunting I've had in awhile. The landowner bailed on me in the morning, so there were no drives, but I sat until 12. I did see 3 squirrels, and had one climb the tree and jump across directly on top of me, kinda cool. Due to drinking too much coffee and being so freaking cold I did walk a little bit, but hung close. I only heard 5 shots, 2 of which were with a repeating muzzleloader ;) Went home for lunch and then walked through the second spot. I slowly walked through for about an hour and a half, I did hear a close boom so I wonder if I kicked something out. Lots of tracks (and a TON of squirrel sign, gotta keep that in mind). Went back to the third map and sat (with a seat cushion!) and didn't see a thing. I had plans tonight at 630 and decided to just pack it up at 5. My chemical hand warmers had gone cold (so much for 10 hours) and to be honest, I had heard 12 shots, got no runners, and just didn't feel like shooting something and gutting it in the dark....frustrating. Never felt that way before. But boy was it cold.

Not sure what I'm doing tomorrow in terms of where/when/tactics. Gotta think about it.

I'm dogging it and am pretty dissapointed. Before I got there this morning they had hit the salt block...I know they are there, but it would be nice to just see one.

Sorry, that was a debbie downer post.

Like I said at the beginning, it was a good day. I got out and went deer hunting. Can't do that at college. Though I was almost just as much focused on staying warm than deer hunting, and my hunting is pretty rusty, it was SO NICE to get outside and enjoy it. Good to be in God's Green (white) Outdoors and see some critters, even if they didn't have antlers. I've been very stressed and exhausted the past month and half (and have been told by many people, including a doctor now) that I need to relax and take a vacation; and day one in that standard was good. It was nice for it to be too cold so I didn't text, I didn't see a single other hunter all day, and it was just me. There's lots to think about in life right now (college, this coming summer, bigger pictures, girls, family, God, [fitting with the order of that list] priorities, etc) and I got a lot thought about today. Looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.

There are higns and lows all the time......just keep at it....being out there in the elements and getting some good exercise will always be good for you.

Learning how the animals survive based on movements in the snow will help you in the future too...just take it all in, learn as much as possible, in time it will happen!!

Day two recap

Hunted til 1 this morning. I elected to wait until 7 to walk in, good decision. I didn't see a thing all morning, heard 3-5 shots. Saw a few little tracks, nothing special. I did stumble (literally) upon some tracks with blood! Tracked it either way for about 500 yards total, no gut pile, no deer?? Explain that one. Two slick spots of index card sized blood, drops every 3 yards, quarter sized chunks every 10 yards... it's a mystery to me. When I walked out to the truck, I got there and cleared the load in my gun; it touched off just fine (reassuring as this is the first season I've hunting with the gun. The gun has stayed cold since Saturday morning).

After a nice sunday dinner I took a nap and then went out again. The girl who I sat with during youth season (she got a doe the next day) sat with me. Stinkin deer! There were tracks over my boot prints from yesterday, and the sucker even stepped outside of those tracks right in front of the bale blind to make sure I saw them! Not 10 feet away from where I could have been sitting.

Her dad pushed the 30 acre CRP field in front of us (via kubota...hey, it's orange!) and it didn't give anything. We drove the woods behind the blind and I crossed some good tracks.

Day Two- still haven't seen a deer. A little dissapointed but for some reason I feel like I am getting closer. I think I'm going to be in the bale blind before shooting time tomorrow (it's not too far of a walk) and am going to sit as long as I can, maybe all day. Likely to take a break though. We'll see...I think I'm going to take a camera tomorrow (or at least pull my phone out) and take some pictures of the spot at least.

Day Three Recap.

Moral is at an all-time low. I knew that it was going to be rough hunting, but not this rough. Sat this morning and this evening (with a nap in between), didn't see a thing. Very discouraging to not even see tracks around where I am sitting. Heard probably a dozen shots today and once again was in disbelief that I didn't even see anything run through.

Going to get up and hunt in the morning...I almost don't want to, but feel like I owe it to myself to try again.

On the positive side, I got a lot of thinking done today....sure there will be more tomorrow. Did see 3 squirrels though (I think one in the evening was a repeat from the morning). Always fun to watch.
