Dermestid Beetles

Discussion in 'Taxidermy' started by hunt1up, Sep 21, 2012.

  1. Anybuddy use & raise Dermestid Beetles? Have always wanted to try them on some skulls. It seems the smell & keeping them warm are the biggest issues...Do have plenty of meat scraps to feed them..

  2. I have heard that they dont work well enough to make it worth the hassle.

I took one of my skulls to OSU's bug department (can't remember the real name). They have dermestid beetles that need fed. I just needed to peel the hide off the skull and drop it off. After the bugs did their thing, they put my skull in a freezer to kill the ones that would not leave the skull. When I got it back it did have an odor. I blew out all holes and left the skull outdoors for about a week. It was really cool and free of charge.

  4. I have a friend who has beetles. They do a nice job IMO. If anyone is interested I could put you in contact.
