Custom rod building

Discussion in 'Tackle Talk' started by LakeRaider, Jan 4, 2003.

  1. Does anybody here build their own rods? I would like to build some custom crappie rods. Janns tackle is where I will purchase the blanks and parts from. Any tips? Also noticed they sell kits. How is the quality? Thanx LakeRaider:""

  2. I haven't done it but have wanted to get into it. Someday I will.

I don't have any tips, but , here's a great site I go to that has a lot of info on it.

  3. Making your own fishing rods

I make my own fishing rods, right now I am making a catfish rod.
I suggest that you get a Cabela's Tackle Craft Catalog, in my opinion they have better quality kits. You'll have a lot more choices with Cablea's. If you go with the kits from Netcraft you'll get a foam handle as opposed to a cork handle that you get with kit from Cabela's. Neither kit is actually complete, the Cabela's kit gives you the rod finish but not the color preserver. The Netcraft kit doesnt have the color preserver or finish, but does sell a separate rod-finish kit with both. Cabela's rod finish is very easy to work with, I dont know who's finish you'll get with Netcraft, so this is just another reason to go with the Cabela's kit. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I can be of any further assistance.

  4. Be careful

I hear that rod building can become addictive too !! Sure looks like an interesting hobby. I'd like to make a few off those St Croix blanks for those kitty cats !:p
