"TWO FELONY COUNTS"? This is crap!

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio - Michael Chedester, the St. Clairsville man who admitted to shooting and killing two dogs on his hunting property last November, was sentenced to 6 months in jail and given 3 years' probation for the crime on Monday.

It was a groundbreaking decision, as Chedester was sentenced under a new Ohio law. Chedester, 59, claimed the dogs were chasing away the deer.

Prosecutors were quick to charge Chedester with two felony counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals.
Vavra sentenced Chedester to 6 months in jail and 3 years' probation.

"Columbus needs to change the teeth in Goddards Law to where the judge can give someone who does this kind of stuff more time," Byers said.

Chedester was also ordered 500 hours of community service at the county animal shelter, or the choice of a $5,000 donation to the facility.

He also agreed to pay an additional $200 toward the reimbursement of the dogs, along with a $2,500 fine.

And while Chedester won't see the inside of prison walls, many of his freedoms are now relinquished, including the right to vote and own a weapon,

And the man that let his dogs be at large was not charged with anything . I know what Chedester did was wrong and was a butthole thing to do . But I do not agree that it should be a felony charge . I know many people think he should get much more and love this new law . I don't feel that way and we all have opinions .

I have the same opinion catchdog, if there were some reprocussions for the dog owners, this wouldn't even be an issue!!! Doesn't Ohio have a leash law anyway?????

I figured it would be in his case!! He was pretty rediculously ruthless!! Posing in pics with the dogs, that is just weird imo!! He isn't helping hunters out at all with that kind of negative publicity!! I just can't believe the other party didn't get at the least, a ticket??? If we want to set examples of good dog ownership, that would have been a good podium to do so!! The number of dog owners who have dogs just to have them, is large down here!! Some of them probably don't get food very often, if at all, so the woods is their kitchen!! These people need to be made examples of just the same!! There is always two sides to every coin!!! We must always remember that!! This will open the door to some of these people, who will see dollar signs, in form of a lawsuit, when someone does the same to the dogs that they don't care about in the first place!! We are opening a can of worms here I believe, we need to be careful with this law!!!

Your getting close to two thousand likes 56 wow!!! That's awesome too!!!!
The felony, fines, etc. were reasonable for his actions and attitude.....make it too tough and he becomes a poster child for those wishing to be enabled for like actions and for those who need to feel justified in devaluing the life of a lost or errant dog(which, in the real world as opposed to message boards, happens)....devalue out of simple boredom or billfolds.
Some clowns will also bring in loss of some Right.....never let an issue go by w/o corrupting it to some greater agenda is all too common today.

Sadly, it does not appear that Chedester lost his hunting rights even with the felony taken while and in being a deer hunter.....I reckon he can still sit in a tree with archery equipment, mebbe mzloaders not sure, and kill again.
Next time he will likely join the ranks of the SSS folks.
No firearms but with the money he saves in ammo he can buy a real nice shovel.

Justice was served after a fashion...the county hoosegow was not the most Chedester could have received but not a walk-off either.
The folks wishing for a truly drastic ending for the oddball sicko are as wrong as those hunters who wished he would have just shut up and hoped for the whole mess to be over.
Going to either extreme takes the focus conveniently away from the reality of hunters, et al roaming the woods today with an attitude seldom reaching beyond the bill of their cap....with even one innocent life being taken the downside....be it by shot, hanging or poison.

One must accept and move on...accept that dog killing will not change, it will just go even more silent.
I doubt Chedester's attitude changed at all, other than for public consumption, and he may be dumb enough to be heard from again...and I know that others will simply sshhh their own actions along and concoct scenarios afield that makes them feel satisfied that ...someone else will always be available to blame...just like Mommy surely told them.
If the someone else can not speak...well, then so much the better.

Keep your mutts on a leash and bad things don't happen. Hell, I can't even vote or own a gun because someone let their mutts run loose.

Take responsibility for what you did. Yep, the dogs should not have been loose and the owner should have been fined for it. What you did was plain wrong and rather sickening.

This past Sunday 4 dogs came running right through my turkey hunting setup. I didn't even think about shooting them. 2 hours later, I called in a turkey 75 yards from that spot. 4 dogs running loose and nothing bad happened. And I can still vote and own a gun.

This past youth season 2 dogs “happened” upon my son’s deer he shot. The dogs had been running deer from the other side of our property (tactacam pictures gave us a timeline of how this all unfolded) and came up on us just after the deer was shot. They ran his deer down into the woods. By the time we got there, they were biting at his head …the buck had bedded up against some downed trees, keeping his hind quarters hidden and was doing his best to use his spikes to fend off the dogs. Those dogs did not want to leave that deer and the pit mix was actually aggressive toward us. They left but circled back. I honestly thought we would have to shoot the pit, but it made a life saving decision and reluctantly left. To this day, we still get pictures of these dogs (and now a third dog with them) running loose, chasing deer 😤
I personally don’t believe any dog should run loose without supervision, and that especially applies to house cats. Dogs can be such a nuisance and cats so destructive. However, if someone shot one of my hounds while I was hunting them, we’d have a real serious problem that probably would get resolved right there in the field.
