I purchased a PA non resident hunting license this past fall to pheasant hunt with some friends on PA SGL. It included a fall and spring Turkey tag. I’m planning on hunting PA this spring. Anyone ever hunt western PA SGL for turkeys?

I have but it's been so many years ago I have nothing recent to offer. Had shot opportunities but its been 25 years give or take. However, we are both going to be learning how they are perhaps. This past season I purchased a non resident P.A. license as well. First time in manay years. Hunted a few times for deer during their early fall muzzy season. Doe only but I love to fall tent camp so it was a blast. Like you say as an added bonus the basic license includes both a fall and spring turkey tag. I have their spring opener circled on my calendar. I am going to guess opening day will be crazy and after that other than Saturdays the pressure should be light. (I hope) If the game lands are too crowded, I can get to the Western border of the Allegany National Forest with an hour and forty-five-minute drive. That opens more public land for me to hunt on than the entire state of Ohio has to offer. Good luck! How was the pheasant hunting?

Sounds good!! We enjoyed the pheasant hunting. PA stocks a crap ton of birds. I was looking at SGL 285 and 117. I figure if I’m lucky enough to kill one opening week here in Ohio then I can hunt PA, they open week after Ohio.

Good luck to you! I’ll keep you posted on what I find. I’m in eastern Ohio right off US22 so it’s a short ride to PA for me.

I have! Last year. With Ohio going to 1 bird and then I got my bird the first week of the season and then I took vacation days the last week of May to go turkey hunt. Well I couldn't not go turkey hunting so I went to Pennsylvania. I hunted 2 different gamelands, 2 days each. It was nice being able to hunt all day the last week of their season. I did a lot of scouting and know a lot more about each area in case I decide to do this again. I did not get a turkey but I did see turkeys every single day. Mostly hens and jakes but where there are hens and jakes, there are toms somewhere. I never ran into another hunter in the woods. I did ride around the parking areas a few times to see if there were others hunting and I think I only saw another vehicle parked once or twice. This is one of the big reasons I love hunting late season.

Great info, Bluedog! I don’t know why I’ve never thought of hunting PA or WV in the past but it was most likely due to the 2 bird limit here in Ohio. As you stated Ohio going back to one leaves opportunity to hunt elsewhere after bagging an Ohio bird. Good luck this spring! Headed to our county’s NWTF banquet tonight.

I use to live East of Meadville PA in Guys Mills! Had some good SGL and good farm country! Many farmers were good on granting private land permission for Turkey Hunting and appreciated hunters seeking permission!

Did you ever hunt the National Wildlife Refuge near Meadville? Years back it was one of my favorite spots to go cross country skiing. I often thought it would be a good property to hunt.

Yes, I lived right around the corner from Erie Wildlife Refuge! Killed some nice Bucks and Turkey 🦃! Had permission from several farmers for Turkey 🦃! Really nice area.
