All Hands On Deck (magazine)
Subject: A thought to remember

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Soldier died today.
He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.
While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.
It's so easy to forget them,
For it is so many times
That our Bobs and Jims and Johnnys,
Went to battle, but we know,
It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?
Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.
He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simply headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A MARINE/SOLDIER/SAILOR/AIRMAN DIED TODAY."

It just shows some of the ingredients that this country is made of. It is PATHETIC that it takes an act of terrorism or a shuttle crash or something of that sort to bring this country together. Hours later, everyone has moved on back to their ashole ways of cutting in front of you on the highway, trying to cheat the cashier at the store, murdering, robbing........all the things that are a disgrace to this country.

This country was built by people who were hard working, honest(many of them......all in comparison to todays society) and descent people.

What happened to the days when if your daughter was pregant and didn't know who the dad was........that was looked down on........now all the talk shows are broadcasting "Who's the father" segments as if these girls are something great because they want to find out who their babies father is, when in fact they don't want it for the childs sake, but because they can not financially do it on their own.

This country needs so law and order brought back to it. Enough of this liberal, everyone is equal crap. If everyone is equal then why are standards lowered so some can get into college? WHY IS THAT? I had to bust my a*s to get into college and somepeople get in with a half as* education because of their race/nationality.

Too many people that want something without working for it........

Okay.......I'm getting too worked up.

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't wish those men and women over there well........hope that whatever mission they are on that some ignorant dune ***** doesn't launch a rocket at their helicopter or ambush them as they walk. I don't see why any of those people should step off the boat.........we can launch all the missles we want from the comfort of our owns ships and not put our people in harms way.

equality should live up to its name.its a farce what equality is being passed off as.woman,minorities,etc..if you want equality than except equal standards and don't ask for an advantage.lets be equal from all sides.i have no problem with that kind of equality.

i'm confused

when i read the original post this morning,i was very touched by it.that is,till i reread it several times.then it seemed to place blame rather than really express praise and admiration for those who have given their lives so that we may have the freedoms that we enjoy today.as i read through the other replies it seemed that what i saw at first was not a tribute to those heros, but rather it was just a political statement that was continued by others.war is a dirty business, which nobody wants to participate in,but there are times when it may be the only option, and that means getting your hands dirty.i am as much against it as anyone, but if it should come to pass,i think we should support the people who will be getting their hands dirty, and not be trying to turn it into some kind of political agenda.i say we all drop our political views, and get behind those who may be about to put their lives on the line for our right to have those views.for those who would sit back in comfort and throw missiles in order to stay out of harm's way,i hope i never have to depend on you when the chips are down, and you are asked to get close up and personal.
