So far out of 19, 5 in the woods on deer trails or just general staging areas. 14 in fields of some sort. I haven't started hitting bedding areas. The biggest thing I focus on is areas that I can actually see the sheds. I think so many people focus on areas where sheds should be, and probably are, but they pass them up simply because they are like finding a needle in a haystack. Thing I try to do is find small spots in big areas where deer will be drawn to. If it's a couple hundred acre field, rather than try and cover the entire thing, I'll pick apart the low spots, marshy areas, anything with high vegetation that might get hung up on an antler. Any deer trails that enter into the field get walked into at least fifty yards.
At this point I'd say I'm at one antler per mile, maybe two. It's hard to put a number on it. Some days I walk ten miles come home empty handed, other days I walk a couple miles and get five.
Best advice I can give anyone who's new to shed hunting, or getting frustrated is spend a lot of time in areas that should hold sheds. Grid pattern it. The smallest change in elevation or topography can hide even a good sized shed. And when you find one, rather than just rush up to it, take a minute to walk around it and view it from different angles. Allow your eyes to pick up on the little details and train yourself to see what you might have missed in the past. Also, sunlight is your enemy. Cloudy overcast days are much easier to spot them in my opinion.
