Had a nice day on the Ohio River Sunday. Seemed pretty cold at 7:30 AM getting the cover off & preping the boat. Got to our staging area. Saw the Doctor & Madcatter in the water. Our group was supposed to meet at McDonalds at 9AM. Flathunter & Buckeye Tom couldn't make it, and dip had car trouble. Dave took my son James to where we were planning to fish, I waited for dip to show up. I finally left for the spot after over an hour. Got there and had to launch in the ice. Was weird, affects the steering & sounds like breaking glass ! I was pretty cold and wondering what happened to the 40 degree temps !!

Here's Doctor & Madcatter where they were....no ice there. I sort of wished I had stayed there !

I had given Dave & James a 2-way radio. They said they were on a hot bite, already caught 4 fish.
Here's a shot from late in the day.

Dave's boat

He's got a real nice 18' Lund Fisherman, put a rod holder on the back similar to the one my boat came with.

One reason I was cold starting out was i threw my castnet in some clear spots for bait, after several throws, i got some near a bridge piling. I like fresh bait when possible, even if I use it cut, fresh is better.

The river was still up, there was alot of debris, not as bad as last Sunday, but you still had to be cautious for submerged water logged trees. I don't worry about the ones I can see !

I moved around alot

I moved from one spot to another, trying to fish where I could locate them. I was marking a few at the top of the channel break in 32' of water, nice sized fish. Couldn't coax them to bite !! Got a few nibbles. Next I moved to some 25' water. Then to some 55' water. All in the same general area, the current was pretty fast. It's always fast here, it's an outside bend near a creek. There's a few humps in the deep water. Also the mouth of the creek drops from 7' to 26' real fast. I'd see gulls swoop down on shad in the creek, so I'm figuring maybe the cats would move up & feed on them, also thought my live shad would be the ticket.
I finally moved downstream to a new location. Also got more taps, had 3 rods tapping sometimes, but no slams. (IN allows 3 rods, KY is unlimited- Ohio River) I fianlly caught my one fish for the day !! Hit some fresh cut shad on an 8/0 circle hook.

Got the hook thru his lips !!

James had a paddle fish (a baby) somehow take his bait. They are plankton eaters, so it may have been accidental. Check out the gill plates on that baby....looks like something from outer space !

Here's some of the fish Dave & James caught.

Incidentally....all these fish were released, Dave has 2 or 3 livewells in his boat, they kept them for me to take pictures of !

The biggest fish.......a bluecat.

Here they were fishing earlier.

New Camera

I got to try some tricks with my new camera, it's a Sony DSC-S85. Here's how to do a zoom, 1st I zoomed in & took the shot with the largest size ( 2 mb 4.1 megapixal-fine) then I resize it in the camera after optical zooming & trimming it. Here's the original of them in the boat.....

Now here's the resized zoom ! I was pretty far from them too !

That's about it.....got back to the staging area. Doctor & his partner Lynn were gone. Ran into Macfish & his son, his buddy Chris was there & then my buddy Chris pulled up too. Funny how all these guys from all over wind up meeting there, I'm 1 hour away, some are 1 1/2 - 2 hours away.
