I got pictures of a nice 10 Point that has shed one side already. He shed it December 26th, got pictures of him on the 28th and he’s still carrying the other side.
Had one here in Jersey shed in the middle of December. Most deer that I see harvested in January usually have loose racks. Saw one guy grab his deer by the antler to drag it out and it popped off in is hand.
Ours seems to drop early in our area. I always give myself a deadline of middle of December to have my target buck killed. After that it has to be close enough to see the tops of the head with naked eye before anyone shoots where we hunt.
I shot a buck in Pennsylvania the second week of rifle season that lost its horns from the time I shot it until the time we found it about 200 yards. We found both sides. my buddies son also shot a buck that he thought was a doe that had lost both sides.
I know it’s not unusual for some to drop in December but I too have a pic of a 8 pointer shedding one side and the date was very close...my pic was taken in NJ though.
Yes the date is correct in the pic. This buck held until mid February last year. We found his one side I think around the end of February. They do normally drop earlier in this farm compared to the other farm I hunt.
Saw a small 8 point last night chasing a doe around my apple trees. The last time I saw that same buck he was chasing a doe around my apple trees. That was a day or two before Christmas! I have read in books that if does don't get pregnant that they will keep coming into heat about the same time every month and as late as March or April. Young does coming into heat for the first time can also get bred this late. So is this the third rut? Will there be more? The fawn in this pic was born the first week of July. I don't remember how long does carry their fawns before birth, but I think this one was conceived late. Good luck hunting and be safe.
Almost all the snow has melted today. I took the beagles out for a run. Just for exercise, no gun. I was keeping my eye out and walked right up on this one. I'll go back later and look and see if its mate is near or not. Just didn't have time today. First shed this year for me.
Nice one bluedog! They should really start to drop over the next 5 weeks. Don’t know if I wait too long but I usually don’t go out until late February to start shed hunting.

Thanks! I don't really start looking seriously until after rabbit season is over. But anytime the snow is low and I'm out with the beagles, I just try to look around some.
