Season opener is very close now. Like most early season starts it seems to just get hotter the closer the date gets. 90 degree temps next week in the forecast. A lot can change but if next week's temps continue or in the 80s I won't be found near a woods. I get very geared up for hunting but the heat usually prevails for my early season until a cold front.....anyone else excited though?
too hot! what did it for me was a squirrel hunt with a couple of buddies in mid September i shot one and it had warblers on it. i about threw up and left it for the coyotes. now i wont shoot anything except deer before the first frost and even then its a little leary.
Wow...... real men make dumplings out of the warble.....
others just wait for it to crawl out and then shoot the squirrel that had one it a week before....
Some may want to know more....
Last year this time they were tearing up my red oaks.( bi year maybe)Not so much this year. I've been watching one sit in hickory tree and chow down the last few evenings.
Last year I had pictures of over 20 at one time on my trail camera so something needs done.
Usually I just let the kids hunt them... Sorta funny when I hear from them and their dads just arnt no squirrels.
Nothing worse than trying to bow hunt with squirrels all over the place. I'll probably take my boxer dog with me a few times this year. She gets really excited tho and whines. Sorta fun to watch her.
I'm very excited about squirrel season. And I usually get the bug to go out early. But I must admit, I'm not so enthusiastic about going out in 85+ degree temps and being eaten alive by mosquitoes. And if I want to fight off the mosquitoes, I need to douse myself with tons of bug repellent. Not thrilled about that either.
Maybe this year I'll wait for one good frost.
I sure do like to go out when the leaves start turning. Maybe I can get the grandson more interested in it this year.
I don't deer hunt, but I've read if you want to be surrounded by squirrels....go deer hunting!
I'm more than ready. We've had a really mild summer & I'm hoping it stays that way. I've been hunting them here for 13 seasons & have never found even 1 warbler.
I'm pumped for hunting. Although I'm not going into jungle like mosquito infested hell holes for squirrels. I did purchase a thermocell for more early season hunts this year. I'm more excited for dove fields. I'm going to take my kids to use as my dogs and I might take an old dog for fun as well. peanuts and juice boxes I'm sure will be along to keep young ones comefortable. If the action is extremely slow I'd bet an ipad will come too. I'm very much looking forward to it. If I owned an Erie boat again I wouldn't think of hunting on weekends until rut.
Although today was a cool down from what it's been and there was a breeze.....I went into the woods to retrieve a ground blind that was left from last season which my brother in law said I could have last night. It was pleasant. I wasn't sitting waiting on a squirrel but if the thermacell works as advertised on here I'm game.
I went looking for mushrooms at lunchtime today. I hosed myself down with bug spray. Yesterday's rain must have fired the bugs up. I wasn't bitten but it was extremely unpleasant just walking in the woods getting swarmed and it's low 70s. I'm sticking to the open fields for doves early in a breeze and away from malaria. I did hear fear of an early frost on a farm report!
I sighted in the .17 today & both of us are ready. I was sitting outside watching the eclipse Monday & the sweat bees were terrible. I can't remember the last time they were that bad.
