How's Your Muzzleloader Shooting??

In preparation for the upcoming deer gun season I have spent a lot of time at the range finding the optimum bullet and powder charge combinations for my Thompson Center .50 cal Omega muzzleoader with leupold 3 X 9 VXIII .

I have finally narrowed my selection down to 2 bullets:
This target is using 245gr PowerBelts, 110 gr. loose 777 ffg powder and .25 ACP pistol brass with small pistol primers as the ignition source.

All 3 shots were taken at 100 yards using a rest.

This target was using Hornady SST 250 gr low drag sabots and 110gr of loose 777 ffg powder and .25 ACP pistol brass with small pistol primers as the ignition source.
All 3 shots were taken at 100 yards using a rest.

The only thing left for me to do is shoot both bullets with the same load(s) at the 50 yard line and pick the one that holds the tightest groups.

Sore subject...

I bought a Remington Genesis last year when Cabela's was getting rid of them. I got home two days before the extended gun season last year and wanted to see how well it shot out of the box, after all if it is a Remington! I couldn't hit crap with it, neither could my buddy so I scrapped that idea and when with the shotgun. Of course because of family vacation last year I couldn't hunt muzzleloader (and had already shot my deer). This year I will have a final on the day of extended gun weekend (don't get me started) so my only hunting will be during muzzleloader. I hope it's not a cold 4 days, but I want snow and hopefully some good deer activity.

But I realize I've got a lot of work to do between now and then. Sadly, I've only shot the gun once between now and then and hit 3/4 clays with it at 75 yards. Over Thanksgiving break I will take an afternoon to shoot the crap out of it and get it where it is shooting good (I know it shoots good I just need to find my distances and a load) and then shoot it as much as possible between then and muzzle loader. I've hunted two previous muzzeloader seasons and had 1 miss and 1 click (the load didn't go off), actually that'd be 2 misses once I put a new primer in and shot...both of those were with borrowed guns. I'm also debating putting optics on it between now and then but am pretty pumped for shooting my first with a smokepole!

So I'm excited for muzzleloader and a new gun, but to answer the question: How is your muzzleloader shooting? Not well.

My encore shoots like trash. Sent it back to be checked, havent shot it since I got it back. I watched bud45601 shoot a 3 shot group with his encore from a vise at 150 yds. I could have covered all three holes with my thumb. His load was 2, 50 grain pyrodex pellets, and a saboted hornady xtp. Very unimpressive load with unbelievable accuracy.

My omega is dead nuts at 50 yards I have all 3 holes touching. At 100, its a 2 inch group.

The Contender flint lock, w/ patch and round ball, is shooting as good as ever to 75 yards.

Bring on the season. I love that one too.

Savage MLII 1) 235grn QT polymer spitzer 2) MSB(magnum sub base) 3) 40grns IMR4759 4) 209 Shooting 1" groups at 150yds. BuckeyeBill/ Traditions Pursuit XLT 1)220 Dead Center polymer spitzer 2) 100grns 777 ffg 3) 400 small rifle primer. Shooting 1" groups at 150yds. We are getting all of our ballistic info from PRbullet.com out of Manitob Canada. Both bullets can be found at Cabelas. The QT spitzer is called the Extended Long Range on Cabelas web site $10 for 12. The MSBs are to be shot with the smokeless powders because of the pressures but you have to buy them from PRbullet.com and that takes about a week.

I don't know...you'd have to ask the guy that I sold it to, in St. Marys. Sold it last month to a guy at a local gun show.

He seems happy with it...however, he recently shot a buck with his bow, so all he can do now is shoot a "skin head" with his new found muzzleloader.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57
