Where do I begin
Well this was probably the worst day of hunting I've ever had. It started out good but went to the toilet
with one pull of the trigger. Four. Of us went out, my son, my best friend, and a friend of his. We started at
our first spot and scored with two while we were there. Decided to move to adifferent spot and had a couple of runs
with me missing one my son missing the same one and then it happened. My friends
buddy shot what he thought was the rabbit and it ended up being my beagle Penney. Talk about sick to my stomach, as
soon as I heard the shot and then a split second later the yipping. I will nver forget that. Well I scooped her up and we rushed her to the vet. They xrayed and she had 6 pellets in her. Talk about bummed. Looks like she will pull through. Although it's still touch and go. The vet said if
she makes it through the night she will be alright. So cross your fingers and if you could include her in
one of your prayers I'd appreciate it. I know he didn't do it on purpose but I wanted to lay into him
so bad but I bit my tongue and didn't say anything derogatory. Naturally he said he'd pay for all thedamage to her but who knows what's going to happen with that. I'm physically exhausted and ready for bed. But I just can't get theimage of all shot up out of my head.

sorry to hear that one J.. thats my worst fear....someone hitting one of my dogs, even if it was my best friend I don't know if I could ever forgive them...I have learned from experience that the more hunters you have, the more apt you are to have somekind if mishap..I usually hunt alone or with one other person...no exception, that way I can keep my eye on the dogs and them! I actually passed on 2 rabbits today cause I wasn't really sure where my beagle was in relation to the rabbit, but no biggie, the bunnie will be there tomorrow!
There is nothing like the relationship between a hunter and his dog, my wife says I choose them over her all the time....(they don't complain!)
I wish you and your dog the best, wish there was something I could do to help. Keep us posted

WOW, I am truly sorry to hear about your day's events J. This morning you seemed very excited to be spending your day in the field with your son and friends and then to read this saddens me.
I am sure your friend did not mean to do this and he will carry a heavy heart for years to come.
I hope your dog "Penny" pulls through and will still look forward to running bunnies for his master.
I have two dogs and they become part of the family and are loved dearly. I will say a little prayer before I go to bed tonight.
Hang in there buddy and give Penny a scratch behind the ear and a nice dog bone for me when she gets home.
Get some sleep.
Sincerely,
Riverdude

So sorry to hear, hope your dog comes through just fine. I have had beagles most of my life and I have never had to deal with that.
We all know accidents happen but when you are intentionally pulling the trigger there is absolutely nothing less than a 100% positive it is a safe shot.

WOW . So sorry to hear about the day and your dog J. I know yesterday you was so pumped to get out and have a good day with your son, your buddy and your dog. As soon as I got to the spot in the story when you said "then it happened" my jaw and heart dropped because I knew what was coming.
I will say a little prayer and wish her a speedy recovery. If your buddies friend is a good person I bet he is feeling tore up and make good on what he said. Take care and keep high hopes and spirit.

Wow! That would be tough to handle. I haven't had my beagle out in two years, but if someone shot her I would be tore up. That stinks man. I am praying for her and hope she pulls through ok.

Whoo, thats scary. One of the first rules of hunting, identify your target before you put your finger on the trigger. Im glad to hear your dog is going to pull through.

No word from the Vet since 4:00 Friday which to me is good news I went and saw her then and she was on morphine due
to pain. But she did get antsie before that and they carried outside and she walked
around a little to pee. Which is a good thing. So if she made it through the night which I pretty much figure she
did since no phone call. Hopefully I'll be able to pick her up today and get her home
where she belongs.
Thanks for all the words of encouragement. I really appreciate it. My two outdoor passions are rabbit and deer hunting and I spend a
lot of time and effort at both. I've at this for close to 35 years and this is the first time I have ever seen
or had it happen. When I saw her there and that scared look on her face it brought tears
to my eyes and I'm not afraid to admit it because you would have to be one heartless
bastard if it didn't . Now I'm going to work and waiting for a phone call so she can be picked up. Hopefully it
comes early, another good sign. Thanks for letting me vent.

J, that is so scary. I hope you get good news this morning.
Don't know if you know this, but I am a veterinarian. Our clinic sees 1 or 2 of these every year. I would say half the time, it is the dog's owner that is the shooter. Either way, it is always traumatic. Personally, I know I would be VERY upset if someone shot my beagle. Fortunately, most of the cases I see are stray pellets and not direct hits. Off the top of my head, I can't remember a case where the dog died, but there may have been. Usually they recover to hunt another day.
Best of luck to you and your dog.

What a terrible way to start the season J, I know how much you've been looking forward to it so much.
Hope Penny makes a full recovery.
