Nothing But Headaches

I am huntin on a small 36 acre (17 acre is woods) with nothing but standing corn around the woods. I have been out 3 times and have yet to see a bird....I have been sitting on a 20 yard wide grass path between the woods and a corn field that has alot of droppings around it....i have not seen or heard a bird yet....been doing kee kee runs, yelps, purrs, and clucks and no response...I am also setting out 3 hen decoys also to make a visual because i hunt this area in the spring and the visual even for the hens seemed to help alot........ any tips would help..

Do you have good field boots? Use them. This time of year can require a lot of walking. If the leaves are dry when you pause to listen you can hear them scratching as they are quite noisy.

Interesting---

I don't even have a big interest in Turkey hunting, but I have been seeing so many the last year or two-while bow hunting in the Fall-I invested in a license---(turkey tag). I saw at least eight tonight--but no deer!--Out in Portage County...there were so many the other night--I thought at first it was a group of Turkey hunters--all calling to one another---then it dawned on me--Turkey hunters don't gobble, (or do they?)--then I saw the birds--

Turkeys do gobble all year, just nowhere near as much as mating season. In the fall and winter, you will hear an occasional gobble on the roost early before fly down, or just before dark.

I do not call them in the fall, I just spot the flocks out in the fields and from knowing their habits on that farm, get out ahead of where they are going and wait to ambush them.

Question fall turkey hunting

Hunting a food source is best in the fall. If there are few acorns as is the case this year here in S.E. Ohio, hunting turkeys near a field is better than the hard woods. Hunting near a corn field seems smart to me. Maybe you can find where they are roosting and set up between their roosting area and their feeding area.
