Walleye
Most walleye effort over the past week has been from Huron to Vermilion or on Kelleys Island shoal and Gull Island shoal. Fish are still being caught on spoons and harnesses, but crankbaits are quickly becoming the bait of choice. On the shoals fish have also been caught by drifting crawler harnesses or casting weight forward spinners. Pier fishing at night is improving with the Huron and Lakeside piers producing the most fish.
Yellow Perch
Perch fishing was slow over the past week with the best reports coming from N of Lorain. A perch spreader tipped with shiners is the most popular set-up. Fish have ranged from 8-12 inches.
Smallmouth Bass
The smallmouth bass fishing was excellent this past week on and around Ruggles Reef. Walleye anglers caught smallmouth by trolling crankbaits and fish were also caught using traditional smallmouth techniques. Expect fishing to be good as long as the water temperature is the mid 40’s to lower 50’s.
Lake Erie surface temperatures range from 49 to 53 degrees.
