Does anyone in Central, or Southern Ohio Carry them??? Or do you have to order them?

I'm going to go check them out. You guys think Buckeye outdoors will have them?

Yep those look good, but at $2.00 per hook you don't want to lose to many of those.

10/0 and 12/0 sizes

Wish they made those G208 Circles that big, I tried some 12/0 Daiichi's, last year on 10 inch live Gizzard Shad and the heavy hook made the Shad so tired they would just lay down on the river bottom and stop moving.........Doc

Doc

You don't have to pay $2 a hook! You have the cabability to sharpen hooks:D

The chemically sharpened hooks are made with very hard steel and are difficult to resharpen.

If you have to think about $2 a hook how can you cast em in the braches of underwater trees?

AHHAHAHAHA, I just noticed that, dang, 6 bucks for a three pack.

That's a bit pricey.........don't think fishing the smaller rivers and creeks would be a good place for those:eek:

Anyone that uses Gama's knows they arent cheap in the first place..so when you get to big 10/0 & 12/0 hooks there going to be a bit more.
I think the 12/0 hooks that i have been using labeled "Grouper" hooks cost that same amount..Fishermans carrys them and has for a while.

Spend a few $100 on a good cat combo, but wont spend a few bucks for some awsome hooks.... geez!;)

You're actually using those big azz things? They seem too thick to me? I don't even use them for grouper:p

big baits like 12"-14"+ ...then you need a big hook like that to fit the bait.
But those who dont use big baits can get by with any old hook..lol

The Gamakatsu that I use cost .50 cents each, tournament fishing I change hooks before we ever start fishing, or several times if I'm damaging several during a tournament, last year I went thru 140 hooks which is roughly $70.00 per season, $2.00 per hook I'm looking at $280.00 per season, which just don't justify me purchasing them.

No doubt at being a Gamakatsu there a great hook, I figure with the price of everything else going up all hooks eventually will be that price, when that comes about I'll be too old to fish or 6 foot under, hopefully just too old to fish, I don't want to wake up not breathing..:D :D :D............Doc

If I'm looking at size, I could always go with a Mustad. Easy to sharpen and very strong.

I dont always use those hooks in that size..only in certain times when big baits are called for..gotta match the hook to the size of the bait.
On the Ohio R. i prefer to use the Kahle style hooks cause i know im going to loose them and at $5 per box of 50 you cant beat them for "throw aways".

BB mustad big guns are nice, i started out useing them before i went HEAVY on my gear..i havent found a mustad, eagle claw, ect. that i cant break..lol;)

I use the good hooks there, that's where the good fish are *LOL*
Why worry about the hook when you spent $30 on gas to get there & the boat too? I have to admit, my hooks are about 50 cents each too. I'm just finding it humourous to see how there was some chiding to have a $100 rig & a cheap hook to a $500 rig with Kahle hooks
My best fish come from the river, so I use no shortcuts there. I pull out all the stops. With that being said, I'm not paying $2.00 for a hook as long as my other hooks work.
Now, I have a question for you hook experts. I just got some 10/0 lazer hooks. I'm guessing they're Eagle Claw (off ebay).
They are circle hooks, strong wire, big gap, I put them side by side with the Gamakatsu hooks I use(8/0) and here's what I noticed. They aren't as sharp, the steel isn't finished as well, but the big difference is the eye. The eye is straight with the shank, where the Gammy is turned/bent out from the shank.
I can hone them a little & I like the size. I'm just wondering about the eye being turned-not turned will make any significant difference on the hook ups.
I know I read somewhere this guy was taking his pliers & bending the points to point towards the eyes. I'd be afraid of breaking the hook. I can see how the pressure will be a little different on the hooks. Maybe I'll take a picture next time I have them in my hand. Thanks, Jim

how some jump in just to take shots!
Jim i loose most of my hooks on the big river, as i fish from the BANK mostly below the tailwatewers. I also run light lines there for cats as big heavy line is not needed there in open water.

Now in close range fishing like i do locally i run the quality hooks as i need the strength to match my gear..no since in running heavy tackle and i light hook that will bend or break...match your gear to the fishing conditions is the key.
But those who fish open water dont understand i guess?

That's just an observation.:p

I couldn't resist a comment after I read this "Spend a few $100 on a good cat combo, but wont spend a few bucks for some awsome hooks.... geez!" I tried, but I'm getting weak in my old age ! (Besides, I've been overlooking most of them...) Those Kahle hooks are good, just ask Robbie. He's got trophy fish in them. I have some of them too. Maybe I'll take about 15 rods & use a different hook on each one ? ( Just joking !)
So anyway, does anyone think there's a difference in the straight eye on the shank or the turned eyes ? Does it make a difference on how the pressure is transmitted to the hook, and how & why ? I'm sure it's got to make a difference on the pressure on the point itself or the way it's going to apply the pressure after the hookup.
I know one of you guys has reseached it .

Jim

I changed to Eagle Claw L144 hooks after pulling an L141 straight shank and a L144 turned shank down my arm by the line.

The straight shank slid down my arm but the turned shank turned the hook point into the meat and dug in.

Thought I would save you the trouble of unhooking yourself by explaining the results of such an experiment:eek:

All the force of hooksetting is not transmitted along the hook shank in the L144. This turns the point of the hook in to help you hook fish. You would have to do a lot more fishing than I do to produce enough data to prove the angled eyes hook fish better.

That one digging into my arm convinced me

I conducted no tests with expensive hooks.

I've personally turned against circles, I really like Octupus and fish with them only any more. I just change sizes depending on the fish. about 4/0 is good for channels and 8/0 is good for flatheads. I did like the look of those big river hooks though, 10 and 12/0, offset with the bent back eye.
