Harehound, you can probably answer this question. I have heard labs can be trained to hunt rabbits, is this true? I could see them bustin brush and flushing bunnies but will they actually run a rabbit? There are not too many ringnecks up here any more. I would love to take my new goose/duck dog (13 wks old) bunny hunting also( next year of course).

Brian: they will trail them for a short while after they loose sight of them. Not sure you want to encourage this though. Better to just have them retrieve a shot bunny then trailing one. If you ever go out west on a pheasant hunt with your dog it could be a problem because their are a lot of rabbits in pheasant cover out their and you don't want your dog chasing rabbits when your looking for pheasants. Do you goose hunt much? would love to with my young male sometime. Maybe we could get together and shoot some. I have a video tape of my dog being trained you might want to see sometime.

Buckmaster: always looking to meet new people to hunt with and go to different places. Sure if you some good hunting in your area I will put a pretty good pack of beagles together. Or bring my lab or both. I don't shoot alot anymore I enjoy the chase and meeting new people. I live in northwest ohio in seneca county.

Brian don't sell your dog short. My male was retrieving live ducks at 4 months old (16weeks) at 3 months it is the time to really get serious with him or her LOL. Check out birddogkennels.net That is where my dog came from.

I love my Labs to death, but you can't beat a good beagle for a hunting dog.

beaver: your not far off their buddy I have had some beagles that could do everything but but retreive from water on a consistant basis. I sold a pup two years ago that retreived or 200 doves this fall. The guy came back and bought two more females out of the same bitch. Oh yea he shot over 100 rabbits over his first female at 7 months old.

harehound,

I live close to Dillion wildlife area, i have a springer and she loves to go pheasant hunting. How does your lab do with pheasant hunting? Do you ever go to delware wildlife area and hunt upland game? Thats where i like to go pheasant hunting cause they release a lot of birds and we usually do really well up there.

Harehound,
My uncle had a beagle named Bud and you could take that dog hunting rabbit, pheasant, coon it didn't matter. My cousin has 5 beagles all with radio collars on, when we go rabbit hunting what a blast!

Greg,I plan on doing more waterfowl in the future, ESPECIALLY goose, I love goose hunting. My dad has a fishing camp(aka-trailer) on Marblehead. We did the early goose hunt for years, then my old lab died and I kinda got out of it. With the new pup now I hope to do more. That would be great to get together. This pup I have now seems to have a great nose. I will expose him to bunny hunting this year because there aren't very many pheasants in these parts anymore.
