What is your favorite fish to fish for?

Fish

Bass. :)

I can see all these catfish guys going up in arms because it's not listed as "catfish" on the poll. :D

They're fanatics and quite frankly, they scare me sometimes. :D :p

Are catfish among the bottom feeders? That offends me, not really though. However catfish have been caught on cranks. I don't troll for I's but they are caught that way too.

Nice poll, interested on how it turns out.

I'll have to go with other , since flathead catfish are not bottom feeders.

I go with trout, there might not be many places in ohio to catch them, but those places along with the trout and people you meet while fishing there make it my #1 fish in ohio.

Steelhead come in about a micrometer after.

I'm a recent transplant in Ohio after living all my life in Michigan, stelmon, and I didn't know (or even understand) the fervor over catfish here in Ohio at first.

I can say that it's real and has even gotten me to want to give it a shot sometime after listening to them for so long. :D

If you have never been to michigan-sportsman.com
Check it out, it seems to be the equivalent of GFO in michigan. the guys from michigan don't have saugeyes, they've just got the walleyes up north.

Bottom feeders, where i come from thems fightin words..lol
I like a lot of those bottomfeeders, channel cats, flatheads and carp...the biggest GAME fish in Ohio...musky are in that department too, but i dont chase them yet(plus flatheads and carp still grow larger than musky here)!

Glad to see the old GFO guys back togther..HOPEFULLY we can keep this forum to FISHING topics only?

Great site you have here guys..good job!

Like putting a stick in a hornet's nest...lol

Please excuse him. We try to limit his internet time, but occassionally, he tricks us and heads for the local library.

If you guys would show him one of those Hogg flatties, he'd never swim those waters.

Hey man its ALL in fun here..no worries!

Actually i love to fish for many species, cats are just my #1 IF i had to pick only one.
I fish for smalmouth bass year round and have fished for them since i was old enough to wade the local streams. I spend more time per season chasing them more than anything else.
If i lived where you do my favorite might be the same as yours,,,,,if you lived down here maybe yours would be catfish too, ya never know?
Good luck to ya on your fishing quests,
Scott

To post a new pole. No stripers on the list either:o
I like to catch what's biting, no point in denying it. I wish we had steelheads & salmon down here, and muskies too. I would like to expand the species I can fish for. Here's a nice blue (62#) I caught last month, my fishing buddy is holding it. It's the biggest fish I ever landed. Had one on about a month before this one that actually fought harder, but it was in stronger current too. No telling, anyway, we got this one in the boat. Was quickly released hopefully so I can catch it again & break the KY & IN 104# bluecat record !:D

Salmon baby all the way ,KIngs and coho you can't beat the action will post some pics. of some of the one i caught in alaska spent fours years up there came home and never fished again for these little guys.Bass fishing is to boring after that type of action on a lite rod,Shimano quick fire and 12 pound test loved it.

I voted for trout in the poll, but I must give my respect to catfish. I caught a 31" channel cat while fly fishing for smallies in august. Not a spectacular fighter, but a brute to say the least, especially on a 5wt rod. It may not be a "giant" like your 60lb flatheads, but decent for a channel, let alone on a fly rod. I've actually caught many catfish on the fly rod, but I've never targeted them, and most have not been very large. Only one other better than 5lbs. I would think though, that you catfish maniacs, might be interested in taking the challenge of catching a cat on the fly. I'm sure they fight alot better against fly gear and 3.5lb tippet than broomstick baitcasting gear and 30lb mono.

Looks like the same subjects just a different time and place.

Let's see,

Catfish versus every other fish, my fish can eat your fish.

Bowfishing versus Bowhunting, which one is it?

Lakes versus rivers, which is better?

Bows versus crossbows, Are crossbow users real bowhunters?

In-lines versus traditional muzzleloaders, are in-lines cheating?

Merry Christmas to all.

I wonder what the new year will bring us on this site

:) Kim

(view from just a fishin' standpoint)

I hope someday that there will be a good Erie MB that will have the participation of the Erie regulars that are on the I-net .. I can find alot of info now from my top 5 ~ SeaGrant, Dean, Den, ETT (leans toward eyes) & by cullin' though WC (mostly eyes) .. also some by pickin' up bits & pieces from other sites. I'm not a Erie regular by any means, but would luv to see the interaction & posts in a one stop site of all the Erie species. Now with the other smaller lakes & streams in Ohio that could never be a reality (Looks like the same subjects just a different time and place) with the small angler base @ each location, especially on the mixed specie sites. (I have a few thoughts .. BUT!!!)

I don't want to dwell on this any longer ~ it's Xmas ;)

I've caught plenty of all of these species and my friends think I'm crazy, but there's something about chasing fish on the Big Water of Lake Erie or on a secluded lake in Canada. Walleyes get my vote.

I lived in the Northwest over 20 years and been back to Ohio for the last 6 years. I still have visions of my Alaska trips, the great trout and salmon fishing, and the enjoyment of the area and wildlife. I can only imagine catching a 200 lb halibut(wow). I spend most of my fishing trips on the big pond" Lake Erie" for the last 5 years. Fish for perch and walleyes for food, Lake Erie smallmouth for sport.

i like mostly whats biting...largemouth in the early spring.8# largemouth is a lot to handle.but boy those big cats will make you forget bass quick and i am talking 10-15#.oh geeze, what about a 50#!big blue gill about an inch thick is great on fly rod too.

huronbob
02-07-2003, 12:14 AM
I also enjoy fishing for all types of fish, big sheephead are a blast. I haven't caught any large catfish, Lake Erie channel catfish I have caught are between 19" to 22". Lots of fun! Perch and bluegills is my two favorite to eat, but I sure like cleaning only a few eyes instead of 30 perch or gills.

When I visit my siste & brother-in-law in Montana I usually fish the Madison River cause its like right out their door, but have fished the Yellowstone and a few small streams that branch off the madison. I found those smaller streams are better fishing than the fast water of the river. I haven't made it to a mountain lake yet. They have one up behind their house that I want to hit sometime. The brother-in-law says you can go ny horseback most of the way and then hike the rest. He said we could take a tent and stay over for the night. Thast would be a blast. I hope he has time this summer cause I would love to do that.

I'd have to vote for walleye, saugeye. Bass a close second. The past couple years though bass has taken a further second due to me honing in my skills as a top notch eye fisherman. Is the saugeye fishing in southern Ohio that much different than in NW Ohio? We mostly find sauigeyes a little shallower than the walleye and usually more agressive. Just don't travel that much for fishing due to good success around here. I'd like to here some imput if it is different.

OHBOW76
04-02-2005, 03:59 PM
Redhunter I see your claim as a top notch walleye fisherman. I had good luck fishing for them when living in NE PA, and success on the Maumee River (I dont consider it real walleye fishing), but I am having limited sucess here in Ohio. One of the problems is I dont have a boat, or a good friend with a boat (He moved to Florida, lucky SOB), and I cant afford a boat since I will be attending school for my Masters Degree in the Fall. I am a pretty competent fisherman, I own quality gear, fish 4-8 Lb test almost exclusively, but most of my fishing is limited to fishing from the shoreline. I have always been enthralled with the walleye, so what advice can you give me for fishing for them from now until mid-summer, what to use (lures, tackle, bait, colors), and what kind of spots to look for when fishing from a shoreline. I am not afraid to go the extra mile, I dont need to fish right near a road. The closest walleye waters to me are ceasar creek, and CJ Brown reservoir.Any help would be appreciated........Thanks.

Redhunter1012
04-02-2005, 04:35 PM
I'm not claiming to be great by no means but we usually get fish every time we go out. We pick up alot of saugeye and walleye from the shore. At findlay and fostoria resevoirs we'll fish on the wind blown shorelines with 1/4 oz chartreuse jigs or purple sometimes and have alot of success. Most our shore fishing occurs frome around the 3rd week in april until approximately mid may. The maumee river is full of walleye right now. I try to update the river report as much as possible. We fish McComb resevoir #2 from the North shore year round with road runners, small rattle traps, crainkbaits, and jig heads and usually pull a good number of keeper saugeye out with some big bonus crappie. I'll post when we start after the walleye and saugeye from the shore. I don't know if you could, but you'd be more than welcome to come up and fish the shores with me. The only time I fish from a boat is when my dad gives me a jingle. I have no boat either, yet.

Redhunter1012
04-02-2005, 05:14 PM
The best advice I can give you is listen to some of the guys on here. Everybody will let you know where to go and how to get them. Patience is the key with shore fishing. alot of times we'll fish for hours with no luck then catch a limit of fish in mere minutes. I guess alot of times it's more luck than sense.
