Here's my report from a full weekend of fishing off Huron this past weekend. We had a fair day on Saturday(14 eyes with a 5lb & a 7lb). However, Sunday we got our butt kicked and only managed about 8 eater sized walleye. The weather was nice, but the water was still a little dinged up especially closer to shore(within 1 to 4 miles) and that is where most of the good fish marks were. I suspect that the night bite off the pier will pick up in the coming weeks if the weather remains relatively stable. I would like to see a little bit better water clarity and if it improves then there will be a good bite. I'll probably check it out in the neighborhood of Thanksgiving as that has always been a good time for the Huron pier bite. If anyone is interested in hitting it some evening then let me know and we can meet up there sometime.

I also heard they were catching walleye in the western basin clear up through September so it might worth checking out the Luna Pier in Monroe MI. If anyone has a report on that it would be good to hear. Who knows maybe even Lakeside will produce this fall?

Oh by the way, the perch fishing this weekend was decent with some nice 12"ers being caught but not many limits reported.

Walleye 'night bite' may be starting

One of the fishing rites of autumn on the western Lake Erie shoreline, the "night bite" for walleye, appears to be getting under way at least in the Huron area.

Dale Jalovec, manager of Huron Bait and Supplies, said that some anglers on the Huron municipal pier at or after dusk Sunday latched onto some excellent walleyes, some to seven pounds or more and 30 inches long. "It just started the last two days," Jalovec said yesterday.

Be advised that the night shoreline walleye fishery is hit and miss - some nights excellent, other nights just long and cold. But there is a certain fascination in casting a large crankbait in the dark and having a hefty 'eye smack it.

Among baits to try are the Husky Jerk, Reef Runner, Smithwick Rattlin' Rogue and cranks of similar patterns and action, Jalovec said.

Among the places to try are the piers at Huron's Mazurik Public Access and the Lakeside pier, both on the Marblehead peninsula east of Port Clinton, the Catawba State Park pier north of Port Clinton near the tip of Catawba Peninsula, and the Camp Perry and Metzger Marsh piers.

Jeff Tyson, the state's Lake Erie fish-management supervisor at Sandusky, said that more westerly piers likely will not grow active till later in the fall, given typical conditions.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife is reporting good daytime walleye action on Kelleys Island Shoal for those drifting with worm harnesses or casting weight-forward spinners and night crawlers.

Rick Catley at Rickard's Bait on Catawba Peninsula also said that 20-foot depths off the east side of Gull Shoal also are producing good walleye catches. Good perch action can be found a mile west of Catawba State Park on the mud line, and off Lucy's Point on the east side of Middle Bass Island in 32 to 34 feet of water.

Further east at Vermilion, some walleyes to 12 pounds and more in the five to seven-pound class are being taken by daytime anglers trolling spoons and crankbaits about 3 1/2 miles off the Vermilion River mouth, said Denny Braun, manager of Sportsmen's Outpost there.

Yellow perch 8 to 10 inches and longer also are being taken east and west of the offshore sandbar on the 36-foot line, Braun said.

In the Toledo area, walleye and perch action have been spotty, said Rick Ferguson at Al Szuch Live Bait in Jerusalem Township.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says that stabilizing weather should bring out the Michigan-side Lake Erie perch action off Stony Point, around the chart area marked "dumping grounds," and around Buoys E and C off Monroe/Bolles Harbor.

A night bite for walleye also may be starting at Brest Bay and Luna Pier, the MDNR said. A few walleye are being taken in the River Raisin, and in the Detroit River at the mouth between the Lake Erie Metropark boat ramp and Celeron Island.

Thanks for the 411 Ray. I might get up and check out the pier bite this weekend, but I'm a little worried about this wind. It might murk things up in tight near the shoreline.
