Well the inevitable just happened.:(

The Master Gunnery Sergeant who works for me is having his retirment ceremony on November 10th (the Marine Corps B-day).

I had told him I wasn't going to attend because I have had my leave planned for over a year. He said he understood and asked me to get with my Commanding Officer to see if he would speak at the ceremony.

Yesterday I asked my CO to give a fairwell speech for the MGunz. My skipper is a funny man and you just never know how he is going to take stuff. As soon as I asked I could tell that this wasn't going to work out in my favor. Up front he was cool about it and said that he would do it, but I've been around the block for a while and I know that "look" people get when they are getting ready to back door ya.

You see technically I probably should be giving the speech because I am his boss and know him on a more personal level. Well my executive officer just called and basically told me that I need to be giving the speech and that I'm going to need to rearange my schedule. This bull crap happened last year with our Marine Corps B-day ball too.

So here is what I'm going to do. I am still going on leave, but I'll stay in the local area until the ceremony is over. Upon completion I'll then hop in the ORAV and head North. I won't get in until late, but at least I'll be there for the best part of the season. I'll just hunt on baset until then.

To be honest I was having a moral issue with this anyway. Loyalty is a big thing to me and chosing a hunting trip over the retirment of a loyal Marine and friend who spent 26 years on active duty was kinda eating at me. I know this is the right thing to do. Besides, the aviation ordnance community is kinda like a mafia family anyway and who wants some "maintenance guy" speaking on an "ordies" behalf. ;)

So the count down has been set back to:

14 days

We'll see I'm only going to be in town for a few days. This damn retirement ceremony really screwed up my plans.

Made it in one piece. The trip took about ten hours and some change.

I stopped and got my permission slip for tomorrow morning. I'm going to sleep in and hit the woods around mid morning and stay till dark.
