Caribou Dreamer2
02-19-2003, 09:18 AM
No gun spiter will take my first bird with a bow, what are you using this year????????????
Dont shoot all summer long for it to sit at home while i'm out in the woods with the gun.
Spitfire
02-19-2003, 09:22 AM
Don't forget that I was at that last shoot with you. I saw how you shot. You better take the gun, I know I am!

lureboy98
02-19-2003, 02:54 PM
I am takin my gun, I know that. I could take my bow, and I'm a good shot with it, but I want to get one, and I have a better chance with a gun!

You guys better start hitting those calls. It doesn't matter what your weapon is , if you can't get that bird into range. ;)

02-19-2003, 09:40 PM
who needs a call, just hide or use a double bull blind, when the turkey ambles by,bushwack him...tip...they follow deer trails a lot...

Hope this 24" of snow melts down cuse it's tough for old Tom to get anything worth while to eat right now. I'm afraid we're gonna loose a few birds due to this bad storm!......TF
Še§perado™
02-20-2003, 09:59 AM
Your right TF. This snow will take a few birds. Too much snow in such a short span.

02-20-2003, 10:19 AM
Wonder what kind of impact this winter will have on the deer heard?

Not sure on that Jack. But all the wildlife will take a beating this year.

I didn't help kill any of the deer population!
Lance

This maybe be a tougher spring to hunt than past years. Between whatever birds may be lost to this snow and this past springs hatch being a complete loss for all intents and purposes(cold/wet weather). This should make for very few "easy birds"(jakes) and possibly fewer toms. I spoke with one of biologists involved with the transplanting of birds and he said they've had almost ZERO young of the year birds in the traps this year. So sharpen up your calling!

That doesn't sound good for us rookies there lance but wllgive it atry and seewhat happen .You never know beginners luck

i haven't been to the deer and turkey woods for over a month now and its getting shed huntin time...i may be out there sunday but am going to the oba shindig on saturday...check out this turkey situation for myself...all this snow will show whats going on...
Lance
02-21-2003, 03:58 PM
Definetly give it a try! If anything it will give you better odds that if you do connect this year you'll do it on an adult bird! Being a rookie isn't all bad, my first seaon I called in three toms with 30 yards and got one before 8:00 on my 2nd day out. It's been a whole lot harder ever since. It's just a matter of timing.

Can't wait for spring! The gobble of the turkey & the warm air & sun in my face. Better than what we have here now more rain. Now the water well come out of the creek banks. Better than snow & ice I think, I hope it well be. Life is getting better. The power is back on. I got my truck out of the drive for the time in almost a week. God welling it well get better for all of use soon. God bless,;)

02-21-2003, 09:32 PM
timing yes but having private land with no other hunters sorta makes it easy...i am not a good turkey hunter but i once had the spot then others moved in on the same property and a band of hunters bought the property next to where i hunt...now i can't get em to come in ant more...
lureboy98
02-21-2003, 10:46 PM
I'm not an expert at it either, but I called in two toms within 40 yards, one more within 5 but it went where I couldn't shoot it, and I was too scared to move, and another within 15 but I couldn't shoot it. All 4 were on the same day and it was quite a rush, none went to the decoys though.

public land is really tough if yuo want more challenge...those birds are edjookated!!!
Caribou Dreamer2
02-23-2003, 09:48 AM
I will find out this year george(public land)i'm will be hunting in athen and vinton county
Lance
02-24-2003, 07:18 PM
The part that seems to make public land so tough is the people that go there to practice calling before season then go hunt their private spots. Those and the people that can't sit still when they call.

A few years back we came upon at least 100 turkeys in a field. My uncle (with no call) called pretty well and we had 2 jakes come within 5 yards of us. There were 5 of us and a dog and they didn't even mind. It was a pretty cool experience.

Hey george, my nephew & i were headed to nelsonville this past October and saw a bruiser of a buck about 3 miles south of Logan. He was standing in a half-picked corn field on the right hand side of 33. From the road he was a brute!!!!! I should have stoped and glassed him but I kept on driving.
