Does anyone know of a good knife sharpening service? I normally sharpen my own knives, but I have one I can't get a clean edge on it. It used to be my Grandpa's hunting knife and now it is mine. It is a good little Buck knife. I would like to use it for hunting, but I can't get it sharp enough to make easy gut work of a deer.

Also, how much should I expect to pay to have a knife sharpened professionally?

Thanks.

I did a quick look at my THomas Register to see if there were any sharpening services listed in your area, but didn't find any. That notwithstanding, probably any hardware store or machine shop should be able to do it for you, and on the cheap.

I sharpen my own with a hone that belonged to my dad. Works great. I'm a little unconventional, however when it comes to my field dressing knife: I use a 5" Normark folding fillet knife for field dressing. Flexible, thin, easy to use, and keeps its edge for quite a while. Works great for me.

You might want to look into purchasing a sharpening kit such as the ones made by either Lansky or Gator. They have a holder of sorts that allows you to keep the proper angle (several angles available in the holder). The greater the angle, the sharper the knife but it doesn't stay sharp as long. They also come with an array of usually five stones, from very coarse to very fine. One of mine can also be used to sharpen serrated knives. I've even changed the original angle on some of my knives with one of these sets. They aren't all that expensive, like about $40 I think and are easy to use with great results.

I was going to mention the Lansky system when I first saw this post a day or two ago. Don't know why I did not.

Anyways, I had buck 110's for years, but could never keep an edge on them. That changed when I got a Lansky system. It allows you to put a great edge on stubborn blades.

Lansky.........unless you know someone who knows how to use a grindstone, you have to be careful!!!

You might want to check Buck's web site out, i'm not positively sure, but I believe Buck will put a factory edge back on your knife for next to no cost other than shipping. I would try emailing them to find out.
Some other options are like what others have said Lansky sharpening systems, and Smith makes one comparable to Lansky. I have used the Smith for years and have had good results. The one I hear talked about often is the one made by Spyderco, but I can't remember the name of it.

I'm in northeast ohio, south of Akron. If you are close, I'll give it a try for you.

Thanks, Lureboy98'sdad, but I am just outsid eof Columbus. That would be a pretty good drive to sharpen a knife. I have a Lansky system, but it just doesn't seem to bring the edge back.

alpine5575, thanks for the idea of trying Buck directly. I didn't think of that. I will check out there website.

I appreciate the feedback. I guess there are decent, helpful sportsman in Ohio ;)

I would venture to say every restaurant has a knife sharpening service. If you know someone close to your location that has anything to do with that business, it shouldn't be hard to find a service. If you don't know anyone affiliated with a restaurant, just ask wherever it is you usually go out to eat. Just don't say McDonalds, I don't think they actually cut anything there, lol. Good luck.

Here's what I use. A bit pricey but it will sharpen most anything. It has a water cooled 800 stone on one side and a leather wheel on the other. Just using the leather wheel I can put a razor edge on a knife in short order. Send it to me and I will put a razor edge on it in no time. I am new to the board and live in Akron.
