ok guys. i want to buy a camera to film my boy. i have been looking at a camera from walmart that has 3 ccd capability. is it worth the extra money? or should i just buy one of those cheaper models? i am concerned about lowlight capabilities, but want the broadcast quality.

i have searched this page and have not found the answer. i see that treetop is the one to ask about trail cams.

any help would be GREAT!

here is the one i am looking at ---Panasonic PV-GS65 3CCD Digital Camcorder with 10X Optical Zoom
i can get it for $500.

I purchased the Canon GL2 before this season started and it is awesome. Great in low light conditions and a crystal clear picture. If you can put a few extra bucks out there it would be worth it. If you are only going to be bowhunting the 10 X optical zoom should be ok. But I think if you are going to film some gun hunts you will want a 20 X optical at a minimum.

i've looked and dreamed about the gl2 but am afraid the wife ain't never gonna go for that one!!! all the filming will be for bowhunting. what is the ccd size on the cannon? the pana's ccd are 1/16 inch( i believe i'm right). do you think your cannon has better lowlight cap. then a single ccd mini dv?

The Cannon GL2 is a 3 ccd, 1/4" 410,000 Gross pixels. The lens is 84 mm. I am not an expert on what is a good camera and what is bad but just what I have filmed scouting and so far in the woods this year it has been outstanding. I asked several people around the country that film hunting and most votes behind "if you can afford the XL2" was the GL 2. That was the final determining factor to make the purchase. Honestly I have never had so much fun than when I started filiming out in the woods. It just adds another element that I have not recognized before.

we use the Canon xl-1s.....and for the money the footage quality is worth it, but it is a very technical camera and I, for one, believe it takes away from some of the fun when you are sitting there trying to remember all the things you have to do to get everything right with good picture quality and sound.

At Slunger Hollow Productions we use GL2's all most all the time. Some other important features to look for are manual focus which is a most in the woods, white balance setting, a jack for an external mic because the ones on the cameras are junk and if you want it to be broadcast quality you need a 3 chip camera. I think that Panisonic makes a good 3 chip for around $1200 new and I think it is one of the cheapest around that has most of the goodies.

For the guys that do film hunting. What is you typical set up. Do you hunt in the same tree with one above the other? Seperate trees in close proximity? How do you communicate to the "hunter" that you have a good clear view and to go ahead with the shot? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

We put hang on stands above all of our existing stands. In some cases though, it is easier to put a stand on a tree beside of the hunter.

We try to stay in the same tree with the cameramans stand about 3 ft higher than the hunters stand. Usually we have them on oppisite sides of the tree, but being close we can talk to each other to know what is going on. We go over the shooitng lanes the hunter has when we get in the tree so we will know where we need to film.

How high off the ground do you guys usually hunt. We only use climbing stands and typically are between 25-30' off the ground. It is tough to find a tree to get up 35' for the camera man.

Slunger do you use climbers or lock ons?

We use lock-on stands with climbing sticks most of the time. Trying to pack in a stand and all the camera gear is a load. We usually try to set the bottom of the hunters stand at about 22-24 ft. We did get our first buck of the year Friday night and those stands are about 30 ft. to the bottom of the hunters stand, but that was the only straight place in the tree to get 2 stands.

The buck was a very nice 8 pt. about 120" deer and the footage is great. The buck came in through a bean field for about 300 yards and was shot at 20 yards. Then the buck went about 60 yards in the beans and did the death roll. This is a great way to start out the season. Man did the Lumenock look great on video.

Got awsome footage of my friend stalking a doe last night. She wasn't 5 yards away from him. In our first season of filming hunts, we have gotten fantastic footage!

I do some filming ( got a doe on tape this yr that mulf shot) but some of my buddies are alot better at it than I. Last yr they got something like 28 bowkills on tape tween Ohio and PA and this yr they are up to about 8 or 10 so far. Mostly does but they got a small 10 on tape in PA and last week one of my buds put a 154" 8 pt on the ground on tape.

Cant wait for the new videos Slunger.....

carpnjake....How many guys are tkaing all those deer if you got 28 kills on tape? How many years? I am from PA and all I can say is I hope you are tkaing those deer off private property where they need to be harvested and not off of game lands, its guys filling every tag they can get a hold of thats causing a huge decline in deer numbers in the nborthern tier of PA.
