Im begining to get a little worried here fellas. Lately I have not seen a single squirrel while bowhunting! The first two weeks of squirrel season I saw plenty, but now.......nothing. I talked to a guy from Vinton county and he said the samething. He called ODNR and they said there is a disease going around! Any one else hear of this? That really sucks if its true.

Funny you mention that because I'm not seeing any either.
Infact I've seen more raccoons this year than squirrels.

I am seeing plenty of squirrels in town. However, the spot that I have my tree stand I have seen none there. In yeas past there are plenty of squirrels running around.

This is probably my worst year squirrel hunting for some time now. The land where I normally hunt has had greater numbers in years past, and lately I've attributed that more to hunting pressure (landowner's family hunts squirrels there too), predation, and competition with chipmunks, and/or a combination of these. See lots of chipmunks where you are?
If you find the chipmunk reference curious, it is an observation that my uncle told me about when I was young, that wherever you see a lot of chipmunks, you will see few squirrels. In time, the pendulum could swing the other way, and you'll see more squirrels and fewer chipmunks. Lately, I've seen lots of chipmunks, fewer squirrels. Competeition for virtually the same habitat can enable those trends to occur. Chipmunks rely on their numbers for dominance, and squirrels their size/strength. Seems to be a reasonable theory to me, though I have nothing concrete to base it on, just the gospel of hunting according to my uncle, who taught me all the basics when I was much younger.
The DOW only forecasted a moderate season this year for squirrel hunting anyway. Perhaps they know something we don't. Too bad, because in addition to serving up squirrel on the dinner table, I send the tails to Mepps and get spinning lures back. Unforunately, over the past couple years I haven't had as many tails to send in. If I could hunt here on campus, however, I'd be set for life!

There's plenty of squirrels in Hamilton and Clermont counties. Well, there are two less big,fat fox squirrels in Clermont county as of Saturdy morning. A friend and I troll around in a boat to get 'em.

I noticed in my woods, there are a TON of chipmunks this year. I went out for turkeys Sun. and they were chirping at me everywhere I went. Have not seen many fox squirrels, though the only time out this year was with the kids, they aren't very quiet, but very funny. I had my 3 1/2" turkey load and an annoying little rodent chirping 10 yds away, i'm thinking "this load weighs more than you" Whats the law regarding shooting chipmunks??

There sure isn't a shortage of squirrel in my area. I would also like to know the law on chipmunks, I've been seeing TONS.
