I think I know what the answer is, but what do you guys think the deer will be hitting this openeing weekend? I have a place I hunt that is surrounded by both with a smaller area of woods in between that hold the deer.. i can not scout it before hand without spooking deer, but I know the monster from last year is still there from talking to the locals, before the crops got high.. I am planning on setting up on the entry point to one of the fields, just not sure which to go for...

I hunt an area like that, and I will bet money that the buck your after beds in the standing corn, if anything beds in the woods right now its the does. That buck will make scrapes and rubs in the woodlot but he is coming out of that corn I bet money on it. By the way before you think he is hitting the beans, do the woods have any acorns in them? If they do I would have a stnd on the edge of the corn inside the woods. I am sure he htis the beans too but I bet it is after dark.....good luck to you...

This time of the year it's corn all the way. Food and cover both, the best of both worlds for a big buck. They love the beans earlier in the year when they are green.

I will go with the corn for sure. Also, the storm we had here last night brought down a ton of acorns. Those White Oak stands will be great also.

I'm not too sure why people think deer quit eating beans when they turn yellow, but they certainly don't. Between corn and beans, beans will almost always get more action, though at this time of year the mature bucks start to show up after dark. Not to say there won't be anything in the corn, but too many people put too much faith in it. In studies there have been two different food sources found that deer will feed on exclusively, beans and acorns. I would choose acorns over all other foods, but it's just going to take some watching to see where the deer are.

I have seen quite a few deer (bucks included) feeding in bean field the last 2 weeks. Usually dusk & dawn.

Acorns are by far #1, beans #2........corn #3, but it serves dual purpose as bedding cover.

Yep that's right acorns are number one this time of year when near the wooded areas. I've seen deer be right next to both fields (soybean & corn) and a big oak at the edge and they would not leave the acorns to enter it. Of course this was during daylight hours (sunrise to sunset), not sure about entering during the night time.

I'm with bowhuntinoh on that one. With the beans now brown I'd say acorns and corn are ahead of beans.

Believe it or not, there are still green beans in Clark County -

I have 80 acres across from my house that just started to turn the first bit this week. Most of the field have turned (many harvested), but there were a few that had to be replanted and the deer are in them every morning/night.

I saw a nice young basket 9 pointer feeding there Weds am for over 20 minutes.

Just so you know - I do not & can not get permission to hunt there. I can look out the window and watch - It kills me.
I saw a big 10 pointer a few times last year, and a really big 8 this summer in velvet.

our beans are still very green, but we planted them close to July 4th as a food plot, not as a cash crop. And I know they're still pigging out on them!
