Turkey hunting with bow

Is there anybody out here hunting turkey with there bow,If so what is the best broadhead to use Mech. or fixed.

I don't turkey hunt with a bow, but I know if I did I would probably hunt with a fixed because I've heard that mechanicals can malfunction, and also I know that fixed broadheads will work.

CD2...........Have'nt scored with a bow yet although I must admit I have ruffled a few feathers, missed several, and sad to say had what I thought were good hits but did'nt recover the birds. I shoot a recurve and 2blade Snuffers. What I can gather from on other sites most do not advocate mechanical heads unless it's used in conjunction with a high speed compound to insure good penetration. If the shots on target, I don't believe it would matter! By the same token, I know a young man who shot a dandy P&Y 10pt this year with a mechanical head. He shot it quartering to him for 20yds and the deer was actually 23. Naturally, he shot low and the arrow buried in the dirt. After examining the arrow, he found slight blood and hair indicating a hit. Well, he found alittle blood and took the trail. The arrow just creased the neck enough to let one of the large blades slice the jugular and he got his 155 buck! If he had used a fixed blade head, the deer would probably still be alive...go figure!!!....TF

I have taken several so here is the low down clear and simple ;)
Anybody says mech'ls are not worth their salt let it go in one ear and out the other.... For turkey you simply can't beat them :D
If your shooting a bow at a higher pull weight lets say 70lbs then for turkey take it down to 60 or lower so you can hold full draw that much longer... you will need to at some point belive me :eek:
I like 2 shots and 2 only the 1st being down the center when facing you a nice clean breast shot the other is facing away and in the spine aiming a little low thus no meat loss or very little on both shots (almost gut shooting them)... some say shot the wing bone but I have tried and always missed making low shots seems the way to go...

I'm glad you cleared that up turkeyhunter. I might try hunting them with my crossbow after I shoot one with my shotgun!

Thanks alot guys i was wondering if spitfire 100 would do the trick. I am shooting a 434 grain arrow at 278 fps with 69lbs of energy so i think that will do just fine. Thanks again

TF.....Break out that old xbow, ought to really rip 'em with a mechanical! LOL Nice thing about it, you don't have to worry about gettin caught drawing! Good luck.....TF

I have never used mechanicals , just used fixed blades(Thunderhead 100's). I have got one with a bow yet. But with this Double bull I think It's going to happen this year.;)

I got a hen last year in October with my bow. I was using a Muzzy 100 grain 3 blade broadhead and it went right through the turkey and she dropped on the spot.

I simply love the new fall turkey hunting rules for bow hunters :D
I tell all my potential deer bow hunting clients that they can take a fall turkey with a fall tag while bow hunting for deer.... GREAT selling point ;)

I agree there with you on the fall turkey tag i ove it, i went ahead an bought my fall turkey tag just in case you never know what migt happen,I was hunting down in southern ohio this year had a whole mess of turkeys come right over the hill at me and man they are good just barley picked up my bow to see if i could get a shot and off and running they went.I always said in the past man just if i had a turkey tag i would bust this tom well now i just say come on baby.But i will do it again next year one of these year that old turkey will slip up.

I only saw turkeys once this year, and they didn't get close enough to shooot.

I was thinking about trying with my compound this year too. I have had them close enough for a bow, but not in season. That would be a thrill.

i would think mechnicals would work real good on turkeys,even from recurves and longbows.

Tried mechanicals for the first time this winter with my crossbow. Shot a doe at 17 yards, and she didn't go far. I was very impressed with the wasp jak-hammer's accuracy and performance. If I use the bow on turkeys it will be with mechanicals.
