Bigfoot is back.
Much slimmer than years ago when he earned the nickname, "Bigfoot," former Lake Erie fishing guide Rick LaCourse of Port Clinton, Ohio, will tackle the mighty Mississippi River when the FLW Walleye Tour wraps up its season with a Sept. 28-Oct. 1 championship.
Touring these days for sponsor Coca-Cola, LaCourse will test the waters around Moline, Ill., in the coming weeks with his wife, Juls, a rare woman angler on the professional walleye circuits.
LaCourse won the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Championship in 1997 on the Missouri River at Bismarck, N.D.
Also in the field of 50 pro anglers is Toledo's Joe Whitten. The top prize could hit $125,000 for LaCourse and Whitten, who own Ranger boats. The winning pro is guaranteed $75,000. If the winner rides a Ranger boat powered by an Evinrude or Yamaha outboard he'll take home another $50,000.
Doves plentiful:
Heavy rains and wind from Hurricane Katrina buffeted Ohio Wednesday, but hunters should have no trouble finding good dove hunting fields this morning, said Chief Steve Gray of the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
He expects a banner opener today of the dove and early Canada goose seasons. The first half of the dove season runs through Oct. 16; the early goose campaign ends on Sept. 15. The early teal season is Saturday through Sept. 11.
There is a youth hunt for Canada geese, teal and dove by permit only at Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area in Trumbull County. The drawing is at 5:45 a.m. for goose and teal hunts for hunters 17, and younger, accompanied by an adult. Call 1-800-WILDLIFE.
