New York Finds CWD in Captive Deer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first positive case of chronic wasting disease has turned up in New York. A 6-year-old doe from an Oneida County enclosure tested positive for CWD in preliminary tests when it was slaughtered in accordance with the state’s mandatory CWD surveillance program in captive herds. Tissue samples were sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, where it was confirmed as CWD positive.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets immediately quarantined the herd in which the diseased deer was found, and will depopulate and test all deer in that herd. Other herds associated with this herd have also been quarantined.

Just days after the first deer tested positive for CWD, a second deer from another captive herd in Oneida County tested positive for CWD. This 21/2-year-old deer died from aspiration pneumonia, which is often associated with CWD. There is a direct link between the two facilities where the diseased deer were found.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation will be monitoring wild deer in the area surrounding these facilities to determine if the disease has spread. DEC began testing wild deer for CWD in April 2002. Since then, 3,457 deer, including 40 from Oneida County, have been tested, and all tested negative for CWD.

DEC has also implemented regulations limiting transportation and possession of whole carcasses and some parts of wild deer taken near the location of the captive herds where CWD was discovered.

New York has 433 establishments, raising 9,600 deer and elk in captivity. There are an estimated 1 million wild deer statewide.
