View Full Version : Crossbows your opinions
Simple question,
Do you think the use of crossbows in Ohio has affected your hunting in any manner?
Just curious as I live in a state where the are considered unwanted , at least in an archery season.
We can however use 200 yard inlines during our muzzleloader season.
So what is the general view on crossbows in Ohio?
Thanks in advance,
Kirk

I think xbows have brought about more hunters during Ohio's archery season. It does give a boost to the state's economy and is a widely accepted hunting device by most.
Thanks for the reply!
Do you think it has brought more younger hunters into the outdoor sports?
Btw I support the use of crossbows for anyone wondering about my stance.

This topic can get ugly sometimes on here. I asked almost the same question a while back.
But I do think they are going to help get my kids involved into hunting.

IMO - X-bows have no doubt brought more archery season hunters into the field. I think te ODNR saw X-bows as another resource to help keep the herd in check.
I have hunted and killed deer with both (including mature deer) and I do not have a problem with them. I was definately more accurate with my compound bow, but I shot a lot. I am now hunting with a X-bow simply because my family and career obligations do not permit me enough free time to be proficient with my compound any more. I honestly wouldn't hunt during the archery season if X-bows were outlawed - just don't have the time. With my X-bow I can shoot a few sessions in the summer and get everything in order pre-season. Then, I usually just carry a target in my truck and make sure to take a practice shot to make sure evrything is ok before the hunt.
I also use the same shot range with my X-bow (35 yards max). In all the deer I have taken by bow, only 1 has been outside 25 yards.
I take some good natured heat from a couple of freinds for switching to the X-bow, but nothing serious. The best part is that my buddy who gave me the most grief developed a bad case of tennis elbow last summer and couldn't shoot. He said all summer he just couldn't "stoop" to my level and that he wouldn;t hunt. After his September Dr. visit he called and asked if he could get together with me and check out my X-bow :D He went and bought a new ten-point and killed a nice buck in November.

Well, I was getting a little tired of "Darth Tater", so I found this running squirrel, and thought I'd use it. The "M" and the green and yellow tail have no personal significance.
I might change it again anyway. Perhaps I'll create a poll to find out what y'all might want my avatar to be! Nah....

Let me add I'm happy to see this thread has not been "flamed" yet! Everyone is showing signs that theropy is working!
I've been working on a "new" book that I call "10 Things You DON'T talk about at Deer Camp" (or around the camp fire take your pick). Guess what? Crossbows are absolutely on that list!!! They are not number 1 but rank right up there (about #3).
I believe they are an excellent tool for hunting just like compound bows, in-line muzzle loaders, straight walled .50 caliber 15" barreled handguns and smokless powder muzzle loaders. I believe a guy or gal should be allowed to hunt with any legal weapon they choose and not be tied down to someone elses belief in "traditional" methods.....and for traditionalists who want to hunt with a spear by all means you should have a right to enjoy hunting "your way".
As Ohio hunters we can all thank Mr. Bernard Horton for bringing the crossbow to our archery season in Ohio. It was his company that lobbied our state governement to allow the use of crossbows in the Buckeye state. Now we have two great crossbow manufacturers in Ohio, Horton & TenPoint and both are doing what they can to open up archery seasons around the USA to crossbows. It's not only good for business but good for our hunting legacy, IMHO.
I shoot or have shot EVERYTHING (that is legal) in Ohio and have killed deer with a recurve, compound, crossbow, handgun, shotgun (pre & post 3 shot plus), flint lock, percussion cap, & in-line muzzle loaders. Even killed one with an SUV (is that legal?)!!! My point is use what you like and to heck what other people might think.......I don't look down on anybody who isn't shooting a Mathews because I shoot one.......I'm going to keepl shooting my Horton, too even though Brad is a TenPoint guy......if the ODNR made .44 &.45 caliber rifles legal in Ohio tomorrow (I think they should cause my 500 S&W has greater range than a .44 carbine) I'd be killing deer opening day with my Ruger .44 Carbine! Let's all have fun and if the state gives you a chance to buy more stuff, go for it!:D

Boy oh Boy!!!
This might be the first crossbow thread that didn't end up in a "mine is better than yours " pi**ing match. I am a little disappointed, however, that Arrow 1 has not showed up here to throw a little of his gasoline on the fire!! Oh well, with todays gas prices I don't blame him!!:D :D

As a matter of fact, hunt101.com has a "Hunting Hotties" section, accessible at the following link: http://www.hunt101.com/showgallery.php?cat=566
I go there all the time. I mean, sometimes. Er, hardly ever. I mean, I only heard about it. Really.

Just thought I'd stir things up a bit (although the UPS girl seems to be doing a good job). I'm not a big fan of crossbows, but I'm not going to condemn their use. I do think they provide hunters with a bit of an unfair advantage over compounds and recurves. I think it would be cool to have a crossbow season in November and December, and leave the first and last month of archery season just for those of us who like to shoot our bows in the upright position. Like I said, just thought I'd stir things up a bit. Let me know what you think. Oh yeah, and for the whole rimfire propelled arrows, I'm gonna have to give a couple big thumbs down on that one.
