View Full Version : How important is your bow being quiet?

I'm looking at the purchase of a new bow, before the archery deer season, but one of the main criteria is that the bow be a quiet one. I hunt all year long for various varmints and feel the need for my bow be a quiet shooting one. :)
How important is it that your bow be quiet shooting?
Thank you, Bowhunter57

I think it is important. I'm experiencing some issues with that as a matter of fact. When I draw my bow back I hear a click in the cam. My bow is 10-11 years old though. If it made the noise when I shot it wouldn't be too bad, but as I draw I do not want to spook anything.

It rates just behind accuracy and ahead of speed in my book.
I much prefer a deer to walk around not knowing it was even shot than to see one turn inside out at the sound of the bow going off.
On that note I've found my bows quieten up real good if I back off the limbbolts a little from 'all she'll do'. It's actually how I set the limbbolts, by the sound.

ncbowman kinda put it in perspective. A quiet bow is very important. remember a deer can react to that sound and even duck an arrow.
i like my bow whisper quiet. like the others said accuracy number 1 then quiet second.

well the old bows i had when i was a kid made a bunch of noise but i did take a few deer i did spook a few drawing my bow and always had to track the deer now that i have a quiet bow i dont have to track the deer as far the last deer i shot didnt go 50 yards before he went down he didnt even run untill he started to woble

I agree w/ everyone before, accuracy, quietness & speed. I have never been concerned w/ the speed of my bow and didn't get caught up in all the hoopla about it. As long as my bow is pin-point accurate and as quiet as I can make it, everything else will take care of itself. Just remember, a slightly heavier arrow will also dampen the noise of your bow. If you shoot right at IBO's 5gr. per pound rule your arrow will be pretty light and your bow will be louder than using an arrow that ways 7gr. per lb. Just something to keep in mind!!

Limb savers, harmonic dampeners, stabalizers, and string silencers make a big difference too.

Hey Thunder, do you use silencers on you recurves? What kind?

Noise on the draw is bad. Noise on the shot is not a concern for me. I won't shoot at one beyond 30 yards. My arrow can travel that far faster than the deer can react to the sound. He'll be hit about the time he hears the sound especially if he is where I would prefer(15 to 20 yards). Also, have you ever seen someone shooting a crossbow or compound get a 2nd shot at a buck? It is not very likely. Also, like TF said there are many products on the market that can help to quiet your bow. This would be good if you are accurate out to 40 yards and have enough KE to affectively shoot that far. Ever notice how gun hunters don't worry about how much noise their weapon makes when it goes off! lol

The speed of sound is 1129 fps at 70 degrees. Your bow is not that fast.
Sometimes they spook and sometimes they don't. When they do they can very easily turn the most well made shot into a miss or worse.

a silent bow is very important.
if yours isn't there are a few solutions.
expensive solution: buy a mathews
inexpensive solution: buy an STS. this thing rocks! it screws into the back side of your stabilizer area and reaches a rod back tipped with sims dampener to lightly touch your string. when you shoot your bow, instead of the string vibrating and "twanging", the dampener stops the bows string and dampens vibration and sound. STS, do a search or something, but buy this product before season, you'll thank me. And it's $40. This with additional Sims limbsavers is tough to beat in silencing a bow

I use lama hair string silences and they work GREAT!!!!
I also noticed a reduction in noise when I strapped on my Great Northern quiver too.

one more thing, if you use an STS, you won't need the string leeches/silencers anymore. So you can take those off and they decrease the speed of your bow anyway, so that is a good thing
