I'm no expert. But I bought some Spitfires last season for my crossbow. I didn't get a chance to make a kill. But those are some awesome broadheads. I liked the simplicity of there desighn. The one I shot the tree with (should have been an 8 pointer..oh well) Burried itself DEEP in the tree. and was fully open. It was the XP with the mini blade.

I was once a spitfire guy and now I am a Thunderhead guy. I have not used the Grim Reaper but I have heard good things about it. I am against mechanicals for the most part, but if I absolutely had to choose one of these two then I would go with the Grim Reaper.

Also, I have read others comments about the spitfire and I am not the only one to have had problems with them.

I like NAP products but another thing to think about. NAP knew a lot of people quickly fell in love with the Spitfire and they sell a ton of them. However, they recognized the head's design problems when others started mentioning various problems with them. So, quickly we had new products very similar to the Spitfire that were billed as better than the Spitfire such as the Shockwave and the Scorpion XP. I tried the Scorpion and I did not feel it provided any better penetration. Therefore, for me it is simple, I stay with the Thunderhead and have no concerns about penetration.

I never had a problem with them and killed many deer with them. Because of my successes 4 other guys in my camp switched over to them with flawless success. Did you shoot single or double o-rings? We only use the single o-ring even at 320 feet/second.

i was usin single o ring. gold tip 55/75 arrows and a mathews zmax bow. wasnt notin wrong with the setup just o ring did not come off blades .shot was a good one too right behind the shoulder.im glad they workin for ya though buckmaster.

Do the Spitfire Broadheads come with practice blades. I just found a three pack in my desk drawer at work the other day. Someone that knew I was into bowhunting, gave them to me to try and I never had the confidence in them. I've always shot fixed blades which seem to work just fine.

we actually banned the spitfire broadhead from our property for all hunters. 3 different hunters had problems with these heads in the same year, after that, we banned them. all three problems were with crossbows as well, so maybe they put animals down better out of a compound???

Ok, there is some food for thougtht in your decision making process. DD and his group suffered through 3 problems with the Spitfires out of crossbows and I experienced 1 out of a compound bow. Thats a total of 4 problems listed with Spitfires. Is that the broadhead you want to be using when the moment of truth arrives? Will you have confidence using those broaheads or will you wonder if they will get the job done?

I don't see any posts about problems with the Grim Reapers so that would be my choice out of the two you posted. However, I am stuck on fixed position broadheads now.

I was looking at those Crimson Talons also. Do they come with practice blades? I heard that if you shoot them once, that's all you'll get out of them. I also hear they put the smack down on a deer !

I have taken 6 deer while using Spitfire broadheads. They have performed flawlessly for me.

I once used the spitfire, never again I lost 2 deer in one season. Blades did not fully open. I now use Crimson Talon fixed blade. shot two deer last year, only went 50 yrds. They have a curved blade same as you fletchings.

Q2,

It was most definately the spitfire. However, the season was 2001, so maybe they've improved their opening ability since then. All I know is when crossbolts are flying 300+ ft. per sec., you would think we'd get passthroughs with this head. All 3 shots, had half the arrow sticking out one side, the other half, out the other side of the deer. If you want a rock solid accurate fixed head, shoot a Magnus Stinger. If you want your best chance of downing a deer with a mech head, shoot a Rocket Hammerhead (2 inch diameter). At least it's gonna make a huge hole and i know for a fact that the drury's are using the 125 gr. version of this head and if you saw any of their 2005 videos, you will see some of the most wicked blood trails ever imaginable.

How do you know they didn't open if the deer was lost? My two biggest bucks each only went 25 yards after the shot. Niether was a pass-through due to sharp angle away. If you put a Spitfire in the boiler, it's like a blender... done deal.

Lots of other double lungs from broadside breaking ribs on both sides.

I've lost a couple deer myself, but the cause was a poor shot, not the equipment.

Not a big fan of the sptfire on quartering shots. I used the Grim reaper in 2004 and had good results but for the price I am going to go back to the Snypers.
