I was just wondering how the early bowhunting season is in Fayette Co. What should I expect as far as hunting around crops, type of terrain, flat, hilly or mountainous, Are the woods full of deciduous or coniforus trees?
I was looking at the harvest numbers in a '04-'05 digest and they just aren't that high for this county? I was wondering just what might attribute to these #'s?

That there is some important info you just passed along. And i'm much obliged!! What a rude awakening that would have been, although I do plan on giving a call to the wildlife officer to answer some ?'s and I'm sure he would have answered that one!
With that I also have a place to stay in Clinton and Highland Co. (Clarksville, and Hillsboro areas) and wondered if someone could pass along some good parts of the counties to look into?
I've hunted Paint creek in the past and seen some great deer but that was back in the mid '90's. I shot my 10 pointer about 8 miles outside of Leesburg on a private farm.
I had permission to hunt the farm thru my dad in law who has since died many yrs ago. So I now have public land to give a try.
It's been a number of yrs since i've visited the area. Can anyone tell me if anything has changes around there?
Thanks alot, Marksworld

Marksworld-
Hey bud I was just pulling your chain. Hope that's alright. Welcome to the site by the way. I'm north of Fayette county in Wayne County so I do not know much about Fayette. I hunt in Holmes on family ground.

If we had more land sure. We have just over 40 acres to hunt on and that includes the house and immediate yard.

I have have hunted there some during gun season. The land is flat, farmland in most parts, with scattered small woodlots. There is some rolling country though. The reason for low kill numbers there is probably because of low deer numbers, therefore low hunter numbers. Speaking for myself, it just dont have much habitat to support the deer in most parts. However I would be willing to beleive that there are some absolute monster bucks running around there.

I live in Fayette Co. Washington C.H. Most of it is small wood lots and creek lines. If you can fined a place to hunt you will see deer. Almost all the wood lots have deer in them. You just don't see the big boys until the rut.
I hunt three farms and can see deer almost every time out. I see alot of nice bucks in the rut right out in the middle of the corn and bean fields. Most of the farmers hunt or they have boys that hunt. Its hard to fined a place unless you get in good with them.
Let me know what part of the Co. you will be hunting and I'll let you know what I think. I know alot of the farmers around here.

Very Flat & very windy. Small woodlots (many 2-10 acres) mixed amongst corn & soybeans mostly. Occasional large woods also (40-150 acres) Nice thick fencerows and if you are lucky a thick funnel.
Be prepared for wind; a light wind is 10 mph. The deer density is very low compared to most areas in the state, but numbers are increasing in my opinion. It also has a great buck-to-doe ratio which provides good opportunities for a mature buck.
What Fayette County lacks in #'s it makes up for in quality. Big bodied deer and large heavy antlers. I also find areas like this easier to hunt for mature deer. I leave the bedding areas alone and hunt the travel/escape routes and scrape lines - which means the fencerows.
I've taken 2 P&Y bucks in the last 3 seasons and missed one larger than the other two on my "off" year. The larger also qualified for Buckeye Big Bucks Club. I know the weight on the 10 pointer last year was just under 200 lbs dressed and with the legs cut at the first joint; so close to 300 pounds on hoof. Just to give you an idea. (And there are certainly larger deer around)

Thanks guys and I will be talking to ya's soon. I've been busy with work and just haven't been thinking about the trip this past week. But I do have a place in Washington Courthouse to stay at and that might be the route I take, I just haven't made a final decision. I would prefer private ground over public but thats why I'm coming so early in the season to avoid some of that, maybe!
I still have some research to do before i decide but thanks for the help and I;ll be talking with some of you.
