Is it finding a place to hunt, replacing worn equipment, having time to hunt, wife............etc.

Mine is going to be my new job. Last season I was just finishing up college. Now I'm "in the real world." I'll have time to hunt, I just don't know how my hunting oppertunities will be effected.

the biggest obstacle I face every year is trying to hunt w/out being interrupted by other hunters. For being on Private land there are entirely way to many people hunting it. Oh well, I'll just continue to utilize their set-ups to funnel deer to me.

I wouldn't call this an obstacle but this season will be my son's first and getting him a shot at his first deer will be a challenge that I am looking forward to.

Spitfire-
That should be a memorable experience. My dad brings up my first deer all the time. Even at age 11 I could tell my dad was really proud of me. Good luck to you and your son.

Caught between taking off my usual 3 weeks vacation for deer hunting and venturing to deer camp or staying home and being a good parent of a newborn.

Buckmaster, w/ a new born, it's alot easier to do things now than it will be in a few yrs. My son is 9 and I have a daughter that is just turning 3 and it's not getting any easier. This year my son will be heading out the door w/ me so it won't be as bad.

Thanks alot CR!!!!! We have a spot w/ some food plots and buddy stands so we'll have a good time. I am hoping to get his first deer on video.

Family responsibilities, activities, etc. I get plenty of time off for hunting, it's just that my schedule is often made on my behalf, if you know what I mean.

BTW, Spitfire, that's a great opportunity for you and your son. Best of luck to both of you! I can't wait to get my kids involved, too, when they get old enough.

yea, he is looking forward to getting out. He has been involved in the food plots and getting the feeder ready to be put out. We are hanging stands this weekend. We also have Pheasants Forever coming in after the corn has been picked to plant a few acres of seed. He will be there for that as well. somedays he seems pretty excited about this fall but others not so much. I can't blame him really since he is going through football conditioning right now and that is all that is on his mind.

No major obstacles this year.

My biggest obstacle is not pi$$ing the wife off too much by hunting all the time...lol

Ditto what Duffy said.

Second biggest obstacle is always keeping our spot low key. We will occassionally see other outdoorsmen doing other activities, and they have NO IDEA that there are such monster deer where we hunt. It's a public spot and very accessable. People just don't equate it with deer hunting.....which is why it's such a good spot.

So if you see a ________ colored truck, we're NOT deer hunting.:D

At least Andy still thinks its his secret spot :)

1. The gorge I have to hike down and up to get to my spot.

2. Not pissing off the 2 cigarette smoking, B.O. smelling, crossbow hunters that hunt the front of the property.

3. Keeping the wife happy

4. Out thinking myself

Andy it's not so secret that the deer don't even know about is it??:D :p

My biggest obstacle will be getting out up here during the week and getting down there on the weekends with the boy. My daughter is going, she said she isn't sure if she and pull the trigger:confused: Hey i'm not going to force her, but she can watch the video of her brother.

You don't HAVE to spend that much.

Finding a place closer to Columbus to hunt. With gas prices being $2.25 a gal making the 225 mile round trip every Saturday is going to get expensive. Time to start hitting the farms to try to get permission.

It's my understanding some of the biggest bucks in the state are around St Marys and permission can be obtained on some properties. Don't overlook your backyard in search of greener grasses. ;)

I'm in the same boat kinda.

My favorite bow needs a new string and I've gotta get on it. Seems every turn lately cost another hundred or two and it's one of those things I've been putting off.

I'm going to order from Bowman too. Lot's of guys tout winners choice but I haven't heard anything negative about Bowman's strings and I always like to see the smaller companies in the competition. Keeps prices more realistic. :)

1. Getting my bow re-strung
2. Planning a wedding with my fiance for April (but I have made sure we are ahead of that game)
3. Like someone said earlier, not "over-thinking" the whole thing. Every year I look back on the season and realize how much I tend to over-think every situation/set-up. While deer are incredibly smart with great senses, I have to remember to keep reminding myself that they have brains the size of oranges (if that). Sometimes the simplest way, no matter how complicated I try to make it, is the best. We will see how it goes!

well, right now it's been paper tuning my bow, or get another one that will paper tune correctly.

later, the obstacle will be to pick the right stand out of 20 or so that all hold potential.

also, i have limited time this year so another obstacle will be sitting all day to take advantage of the days i do have....

Actually I do have one.

I need to think of some more creative polls, but I'm sure I can over come this one. :D

"It's my understanding some of the biggest bucks in the state are around St Marys and permission can be obtained on some properties."

You might be misinformed on that one. St. Marys is in Mercer county, which is not exactly a hotbed of great deer.

http://www.dnr.ohio.gov/wildlife/News/hunting_harvesttotals0105.htm

Great advice about the backyard/close to home idea. I think we all probably drive by some great hunting spots on our way to our own.

Good Wood, you sound like me. I could use some new clothes myself. Mysteriously, my blaze/camo coveralls seem to be shrinking, especially around the middle. I can't explain it. Maybe I'll think it over with a few beers and a Philly steak....

Old tired muscles that hurt like hell when I pull the bow! Hurt even worst when it turns cold.

Gotta agree with andy on the deer in St Marys, there are some there but they are few and far between. Big body ones but not alot of big racks.
PS Andy, St Marys is in Auglaize county not that horrible Mercer county...lol, nothing personal Mercer residents, just the Celina residents. ST Marys arch enemies.

Good wood, i was at the Hilliard Gander Mntn and they had an XL and a 2XL insulated pair over camo overalls for $49 on their clearance rack. It was Teflon treated to make it waterproof, you might want to check them out. If you wait until Nov. they wil jack the price up on everything.

Andy Gehle
08-03-2005, 08:39 AM
Auglaize? Really? Hell, it's just on the other side of the lake.......apologies to the residents of St. Marys. :D
I'm a Celina guy, originally. Just as a youngster, but still have LOTS of family there. In fact, I was just at the Grand Lake Festival just a couple weeks ago.........you know, the parade with all the Shriners and cars that float.
Kind of hokey, but the kids love chasing the candy from the floats.

Either way, that area has never been known to produce big bucks. Not saying there aren't any there, just not as common as some other areas of Ohio.
Now on the other hand, if guy wants to shoot some geese..........;)

Andy, tried to PM you, your mailbox is full. Are you related to John Gehle from Celina? My brother is close friends with him, at least I think that is how he spells his last name.

my biggest obstacle this year is which woods too hunt. i got 5 places lined up with huge bucks in each and not sure which one too hunt openin day.decisions decisions::cool:guess will have too see which one got the biggest ones before season starts.GOOD LUCK TOO ALL THIS YEAR.SPITFIRE good luck with your son this year hope he gets a deer.i know what it was like when i took my son for the first time and he got a real nice 6 pointer with his crossbow it was a real experience for the both of us.

Andy Gehle
08-03-2005, 08:34 PM
Don't know John Gehle. But I guarentee you that if he spells his name that way and he lives in Celina, that we're related.

Does he like beer?:D ........anyone from that area will know what a rediculous question that was.

Biggest obsticle this year is the same as the last two years....US30! It runs right along the main woods I hunt. the last two years they were constructing it and really screwed up the deer patterns. This year it will be open and will screw them up movement even worse.

Then again, it also runs along 5 other woods I hunt during gun season and now that it will be open I won't have to walk 500yds across fields to get to them. Just get dropped off along the highway, hop the fence, and I'm in the woods. :D

My biggest obstacle this year will be to convince the wife to hunt mornings instead of just evenings in order to bag her first deer.

I moved to SE Ohio and will be within 20 minutes of hunting instead of hours of driving and camping:cool:

It's Not A Passion..

School. I go to college in Arkansas, and being a senior pre-dental major, I don't have much time to hunt here. I just get to hunt when I'm back in Ohio for Thanksgiving and Christmas break.
