I prefer to use a 22. Once in a while I will use something different.

I'm definitely a .22 guy on squirrels. I really like hunting with a rifle and a scope.

I just think its way more fun shooting squirrels with a .22 because its harder.

1 round in the head from my Ruger 22 pistol is IMO a perfict way to hunt.

I have hunted squirrels with;
Several .22 rifles
.22 Ruger MK II pistol
.22 Ruger Single Six
Bow Compound and traditional.
.32 cal muzzleloader
My new current squirrel rifle is the .17 HMR. It is a little loud so I am going to get the new .17 MK4 rimfire. That doesn't sound right?? What is the new ,17 rimfire? The one based on necking the .22 stinger case down to .17. I'll look it up. My memory is so bad.

You got it Buckrun. Squirrel hunting the with the smokepole traditional style is the cat's ____.

Big puff of smoke then the second of wonderment, "Did I get it?"

I use an old remington targetmaster with open sites. Sometimes in the early seaon I'll use my 410.

For the early season when there are still a lot of leaves on the trees I use a 22LR over 20ga combo gun. Usually have to use the 20ga as the bushytailed rats disappear behind a leaf too quick to get a good rifle shot.

Once the leaves fall, the .17 Mach 2 comes out and they don't stand a chance. Nothing more satisfying than tagging an unsuspecting squirrel off a limb at 100yds. :D

Early season with alot of brush still on the branchs i like the 4/10 or a 20 gauge but in late season by far the 22 long rifle.

I've always used a 20 until the leaves are good and off, then I switch to a 22. But my father swears by the saying: "If you like shooting at squirrels use a 22, if you like eating squirrels use a shotgun."

I usually take my Ruger .22, but have taken my 20 ga. too. I prefer the .22. Though I have taken them with a bow as well.

I've shot at quite a few with my bow, but haven't been able to connect yet. My day will come:D

Just curious, but do you all ever worry about were that .22 or .17 round is going to land if you miss or blow threw a squirrel?

hunTer06

I've never had to worry about it. We've got plenty of private land. If there were houses nearby, I would be a little more cautious.

If its early year when a lot of leaves are on i use shoty (20)
If its late year i use 22

if i want to set i use 22

There are alot of advantages to using an air rifle or pellet rifle. I have used them too. You can sneak into your deer hunting area and clean out a few of the squirrels so they are not making noise to think there are deer coming while bow hunting. Just getting in and not making gun shots will not spook deer from the area.

But I also like the 22 mag, and have been wanting the new 17 Mach II they will make a great squirrel rifle.

Scoped 22 rifle with subsonic hollow points. With these super quit rounds, I have shot as many as 4 squirrels out of the same tree within seconds of each other.

I use the Winchester shot shells that have the crimped end. I have a Remington pump .22 that I had the barrel boared out to a smooth bore. That really helped. I think the rifling makes the shot start spinning as it goes down the barrel then when it exits the bore cintrifical (SP?) force sends the shot out in every direction. It is all gone to who knows where at about 8 or 10 yards.

Just my opinion.
Steve
