Two lakes at the new, 196-acre St. Joseph River State Wildlife Area in Williams County have been named in honor of two late past presidents of the Outdoor Writers of Ohio.
The waters have been named Lake McKarns and Lake Barton after the late C. Hobart "Hob" McKarns of Bryan and Ted Barton of Toledo. About 50 members of the McKarns and Barton families attended a dedication ceremony held at Sauder Heritage Inn at Sauder Village in Archbold, site of OWO's annual meeting over the weekend. The Ohio Division of Wildlife joined the writers in making the announcement.
The new wildlife area is located on Williams County Road J in Superior Township southwest of Montpelier on the St. Joseph River. Its 70-acre quarry lake was named after McKarns, long-time outdoors writer for the Bryan Times, veteran hunter-education instructor, and an instrumental figure in the state's acquisition of the very popular Lake La Su An State Wildlife Area in the county. He died in October, 2001.
Barton was an avid outdoorsman and editor of The Voice of the Building Trades newspaper, which he founded in 1957. He wrote widely on hunting and fishing as a freelance writer and conducted fishing seminars nearly until his death in October, 2003. A 35-acre quarry lake on the wildlife area is named in his honor.
The lakes are being managed under special catch regulations to maintain high-quality fishing for largemouth bass, bluegills, crappies, and other sport fish, but are open without the need for reservations.
A sign to be placed at the entrance to the wildlife area reads: "Two lakes on this area are dedicated to the memory of the late C. Hobart "Hob" McKarns, of Bryan, and the late Ted. R. Barton, of Toledo, past presidents of the Outdoor Writers of Ohio whose many years of dedication to conservation and sport fishing in northwest Ohio inspired many anglers, young and old." The area also is open to public hunting in season.
