Ohio has one less jake as of 0800 this morning. I was set up on a hay field in Clermont county. The hay and clover is growing like crazy. I started putting my decoys on old arrows so they would be more visible above the hay.
Just before 8 o'clock I heard a loud POP! Not a putt or like any sound I've heard a turkey make before. I glanced over at the farthest decoy and there was a hen, nose to nose with one of my decoys. There were 4 or 5 hens with her and one jake. He didn't seem like he wanted to come out in the field at all. He kept going in and out of the brush. Since he was the first male I've seen in two weeks, I thought "If he comes out of the brush again, he's gonna get shot".
About a 4 inch beard, 16 lbs, with lil' nubbins of spurs...

Make that two less Jakes--
I couldn't get them to commit themselves yesterday and spent all morning trying with no success but today I tried a different approach, a different sound and less calling and about 7AM here they came. There may have been a longbeard with them but it was too thick to see and since the Jake popped his head up first I decided drop the hammer. He also became tonights supper. I fixed some pan fried turkey nuggets with carrots and low mein noodles. A delightful end to a fun day. Happy hunting.

Congrats on the 2 jakes! The first story was a riot... with the hens sneaking in on you & attacking the decoy... I would've liked to see that! LOL!

Make that three...
I got one this morning at 7:00. 16lber. He came gobbling from one hill top across a bottom and up to the hilltop where I was. Very exciting. Now he's ready for my dads cooking:)

Good job guys!.....I was able to get a good bird started late this morning in southern Jefferson co. He was in plain sight on the edge of a big powerline right of way across a road and on the next ridge. After much coaxing, I was amazed as the bird pitched off and flew directly at me:eek: I immediately set up on the edge of a big pine thicket right next to the big tower. One soft yelp is all it took to get the bird strutting to my position and it was all over at 20yds!! He never gobbled after he hit the ground on my side. 21lbs, 101/4" beard and 11/8" spurs. Would have been a good bird to enter in the contest but I did'nt have any way to post pics. Stay late, call sparingly....I dusted this one at 11:30...TF

I have to say I'm impressed with you turkey hunters on here. I plan on giving it a go next season so I'll need your help.

Hens must be nesting heavily as the mature gobblers seem to be coming on more and more late in the day:D I called in a dandy bird for my buddy two days prior....20lbs, 10"' beard and 1" spurs which he downed at 10:30am! Another buddy took his 25lber from that same area late in the morning the very next day!...TF

This seems like a good sign for me for tomorrow. Hopefully I will here more gobbles than I did last week (zero) but see at least the same amount of turkeys (2). I have good feelings about tomorrow so hopefully I will get one!
