Yeah I know, still better than working, but I only heard a couple of gobbles and they were so far off, I couldn't tell which direction they came from. The last 3 times I've been out, its been terrible, I beginning to think its me. :( To top it all off, the weather tomorrow is not looking to swell, so maybe I'll just stay home and try to bag a plate of sausage gravy and biscuits at Bob Evans

I am off of work for the next two weeks. I had the first week off and the only good day I had was the first day of the season. I have a few good size farms to hunt on so maybe I will get lucky..

Wait em out. Find a known strutting zone and set up. It may take ten minutes or all morning, but sooner or later a bird will show.

I wussed out, stayed home. I'm going to skip church tomorrow  and give it a try. I only have one property to hunt, its 130 acres I lease. All during bow season, I would have 20-30 come by every tree stand I have up, every day. Next week, I'm going to go to PA to hunt with a friend for a day so we'll see.

Just keep it up. Something good is bound to happen, and the most important thing is to keep at it. I'm going out tomorrow (Sunday) and I have a good feeling about it.

I will be headed out at 0430 tomorrow. I am not about to give up. I think that they will start to gobble more as the season goes on.

I am not giving up either, but boy oh boy does this weather make it very difficult mentally. I was all ready to sit to noon today, but after 5 hours (5:30am to 10:30am) sitting in one spot in rain and 45 degrees, I was cold. Plus someone started racing 4-wheelers up and down the gravel road adjacent to the woods. What a racket they made!!!! All the noise started about 10am, so 10:30 I packed it up and went home.

I've been seeing a tom using this area as a strut zone almost daily for 2 weeks up until last Monday. I'm pretty sure that no one has shot him. He wasn't there this morning, but a hen did stroll by at 10 yards. That was cool. And I had a wood thrush feeding a foot or two from my boot. That was cool too.

Hopefully Sunday will be better or at least drier maybe (?), but I am getting tired of sitting in the cold. I need to buy a nice parka like I have for deer hunting (although in camo instead of blaze orange, LOL). I may need one on a more regular basis if spring season continues to be early. 60 degree temps would be really nice right about now.

Just got back. I heard quite a bit of gobbling this morning. Then I called a tom within 50 yards of me. Unfortunately he had three hens with him. I kept him there for 30 min. but he wouldn't budge. He finally walked up over the hill.
On a positive note I did see eight deer.

I just got back too, the birds were gobbling like crazy today, the only problem is they were pretty far out. About 9:30 I moved to the edge of the property and it borders a farmers field. I decided to climb into my treestand to see if I could see anything. I made a few calls and nothing, called again and got a gobble from quite a distance. I stayed in the stand just to see if I could see it, I called again and wouldn't you know it - very close, I saw the birds then and I was trapped in my treestand. I had 5 longbbeards and 3 jakes all come walking by within 30 yards. After they left I climberd down and ried to call them back but I didn't hear or see them again. I never thought I would see * male birds all together. Looks like things are heating up though:D

At least you guys have gobblers in your area. Central Ohio has tons of deer and about 4 turkeys. It sucks!!! I was out all morning today and it was a picture perfect morning for toms to be gobbling and I didn't hear a one. I had a lone hen walk by me at about 25 yards.

I did see 4 deer and one was a nice buck that has about 3 inches of new growth. I got a good look at him at 30 yards.

CG,
4? I heard there were only 3, seems like we need a recount. :D Seriously, sorry it was so bad for you, thats the way I have felt the last 3 days I had been out prior to today. It gets you rejuventated thats for sure. The only bad thing is my wife is mad at me because I told her I would be home in time to go to church, but with birds gobbling, there was no way I was leaving the woods. Oh well, she'll get over, she always does but I will have to try to do something to make it up to her.

Ha Ha! You'll think of something Birddog. Goodluck gettin a bird. I might look around a few more times, but I am going to have to find something very promising to keep after it.

I didn't buy my turkey license this year cause I started back to work and couldn't find the time to get down south. Last week I saw 2 toms, 1 jake, and 5 hens in a field about a mile from my house. Every day since then I see them every morning on the way to work. The problem is I can't hunt them cause the people that let me deer hunt their property feed them and like them. I've been seeing them on adjacent property farmed by my brother in law. I'm not gonna piss anybody off though so I won't hunt them.

CG,
Where are you hunting? I talked to a guy who runs a turkey guide service. I think he is NE of Columbus. He said the hunting has been terrible this year. Opening day in Carroll County was awesome, then it turned off, but today it looks like its improving.

Well after a dismal week of gobbling, it's amazing what a little sunshine in the morning can do. Turkeys were gobbling good this morning on the roost. I was set up on a well used strut area so I thought I might be in the game. Had a turkey come to 50 yards. Gobbled three times and then I saw a hen in the field that made a beeline for the tom. That was the last of that. Never did hear any hen talk. Did see several hens and 2 jakes way across the field later in the day. I tried calling to them some, but my heart wasn't in it as I have no plans to shoot a jake. I saw the same hen (probably) that I saw yesterday cross in front of me. She took the same path into the woods about 20 minutes later than the day before. Me thinks she has a nest over there and is laying her daily egg.

I stayed out until noon but got nothing else going. The wind really started to pick up about 10:30-11am and made it hard to hear.

I almost didn't go out this morning because I've been so mentally whooped after a horrible week of no gobbling and wet weather. I'm glad I did though. The turkeys were gobbling. The sun was shining. The little birds were singing. It was REALLY beautiful this morning.

Today was 9 deer, one i could have poked with the dang shotgun. Then on top of that I saw the normal two turkeys with no shot. Before that I called two others, one within 40 yards but I could not see it and the other gobbled quite a bit but i didnt want to get busted by deer so i couldnt call back. Anyways it was an interesting day.

Took my 10 yr old cousin out during the youth hunt. Heard and saw nothing. His mom called me yesterday and said their Saint Bernard caught a turkey in the field behind the house. My guess is he was shot. Some idiot probably shot him flying.

Armedand hammered,

Welcome to the site. My guess is that there was something wrong with that turkey. It would be hard for a dog to catch one otherwise.
