So how many of you are planning on entering the turkey contest this spring? I sure am going to try and get a nice gobbler. I have been out scouting the last few weekends and plan on going again this weekend.
Good luck to all who are going to enter. I hope that it will be a very successful Spring turkey hunt. Lets have fun with this contest.

I believe that it will be judged by picture alone. The photo will have to be posted here on this site and the members here will vote on it. There will be a prize yet to be determined. This will be our first annual contest. I hope that you can enter.
Good luck.
The official rules will be posted here as soon as it is set up.

I guess that all depends on if I go turkey hunting. I've never been before. I don't know if I'll have the time to learn the basics of turkey hunting at the same time I'm learning my new job. Either way I look forward to reading all the posts on the turkey season. I vow to someday hunt turkey. Good luck to all of you!!

I doubt it will happen. I've got ALOT on my plate right now and I'm booked solid until July. I may try to go hog hunting in Florida in May though.

If I get an Ohio license this year even though I'm from PA,am I elegible for the contest?I've gotten an N.R. Ohio license for over the last 10 years or so,but not sure about this year if I should lose my job.But if I get one am I eligible?

Its my understanding that as long as it is an Ohio bird it can be entered.

All you need to do is post a picture Limbhanger if this contest is anything like the deer contest. After the picture is posted then everyone gets to vote on it.

I will got out on a limb and say for a second straight year I will not shoot a turkey. I hunt in one of if not the best counties, for turks, but nevertheless I have only seen one. Probably doesnt help that I suck at turkey hunting.

I too suck at turkey hunting. I have had a few up close encounters, but I have never managed to harvest one. I don't know if I'll be able to go down to KY this spring and hunt them(I do so love to hunt them down there). It's nice down there because even if I don't get a bird we usually have 1 or 2 in the area that will sound off. Hunting turkeys around here is practically a waste of time as there just aren't many birds. I guess I could do a road trip to the Wayne, but with all that I have going on, I just don't know if I'll get into turkey hunting this spring. Maybe, but Im not sure right now.

This thread is called who will win, so I will go out on a limb and guess that the winner will be................Ohiobill.

Hey Crittergitter what county in Ohio are you in.I wasn't expecting to hear that there aren't that many birds out that way. With hunting Western PA and Eastern Ohio,I know there's plenty in these areas and figured the rest of the state was good also. But don't get discuraged with the lack of birds, this can actually be a good thing at times.Over the years where I hunt the bird population seems to get bigger every year. The only downfall to this when hunting spring birds,is that the toms have some many hens to breed, which can work against you.So if there's some birds around don't give up,the toms may breed the few hens rather quickly making them more acceptable to calling. And the nice thing about turkey hunting is,they'll gobble at times and let ya know where their at.Good Luck

Almost forgot,Who will win?Haven't been around for awhile but with a name like Spittin Spurs,he's definitely a turkey hunter with a name like that,so he gets my vote. Also had another question,Is the winner based on biggest bird, longest spurs, beard, etc.or best picture regardless of bird features?

Pictures of turkeys that have been taken in Ohio only during the spring 2005 season only may be posted there.

Judging will be by popular vote of member of this site only. Most popular wins.

The gallery will be open only during the open season of April 18 2005 through May 15 2005. Contest ends on May 15 of 2005.

Depending on the number of prizes etc we may just have 1st place or we may have 1st - 3rd.

Limbhanger I am in central Ohio. Most of the terrain around here is broken up farm fields and very small wood lots. Not many areas of continuous woodlands here so turkeys don't take to it real well. They released birds in Delaware county with no hunting for them and after about 4 or 5 years they seemed to be doing well. So, they opened up hunting for them in that county and 2 years later you rareley ever see a bird. I may get out and scout some, if that proves promising then I might get after it. We'll see.

Sounds good Eschatts, hopefully I'll get an Ohio lisences this year and be able to post a pic as well, good luck to all.

CritterGitter being you don't have many birds a good idea would be to get out an hour before first light during the first gobbling phase and just listen.Their usually gobbling pretty good the first two weeks of April on the roost,so if their around you'll hear them. You could do this in several different areas and just make a mental note of where you hear them, then come the start of the season, you'll know where to concentrate,as they'll be close to where you heard them.By chance do you live within reason to Zanesville area or Saltfork area? From what I heard there are good bird numbers there.Good Luck

I missed last year's turkey season due to some problems within the family but I plan on going out again this year and sticking it to one! However, I doubt I'll be in the contest but I'll still post a pic when I get him...

Hey Limbhanger. I would really like to thank you. You have given me very sound advice and you have been very encouraging. Though, I don't have any honey holes, I think I will get my license this spring and pick up a turkey tag. You talked me into it!

I do have a couple areas that I can scout in the way that you described. These areas do have a few birds. I went shed hunting 2 weeks ago and saw a small flock of about 7 birds in a field. I am about 1 hour and 40 minutes or so from Salt Fork, so that's a good drive. I also have a plott map book for Knox county which I believe has a good population of birds so I might have to knock on some doors over that way.

One more thing is that I might be going to nights at work, so that would be ideal for hunting during the week when less people are out there pursuing the birds.

Thanks again Limbhanger!

Crittergitter, you weren't kidding when you said there weren't many birds in your area.I'm looking at the Ohio 2004 Spring Harvest map and it only shows 37 for Delaware Co.,that is low.But just wanted to let you know that the Northeastern part of Delaware would be your best bet if it's within reason.I say this because the bordering Co.'s 2004 totals really jump up with Morrow at 294,knox at 529 and Licking at 310.If you can travel your best bet within reasonable travel time would obvisously be in Knox CO. At the least if could get to the Northeastern part of Delaware it should improve somewhat I would think.
