Well that's it. I'm going to change my state residencey.

I'm getting tired of Ohio and their taxes.

In years past I maintained my residencey because I would get all my taxes back at the end of the year. In 2003 Ohio repealed this and I had to start paying again. This was no problem with me because I felt that there were serveral other benefits that would make it worth holding onto it.

This year I filed my taxes and was happy when the tax lady told me I'd be getting back $486. Then she looked puzzled and said that I owed $399 for school district taxes. We investigated this by calling the Ohio Department of Taxation. After a short 15 minute phone call I was informed that as of 2004 a school district tax had been imposed and that there was a form I was supposed to fill out so they could start deducting the money for this. The Johnstown Monroe school district tax is 1% of my taxable income.

Now if I lived in Ohio and my daugther went to school there then I would have no problem with this, but since she doesn't then it's time to bail and change my residencey.

Looks like I'll be buying a non resident hunting and fishing liscense.....

I'll probably be changing my residency to Florida.

Yes Florida has no estate tax I believe. If I remember an article I read a while back. Florida has some favorable tax codes. It favors a lot of the elderly that live there off of a fixed income. I think Florida takes a high percentage of dividends or something however. Something anyway allows residents to move certain accounts out of state to avoid additional taxes. If I can find it in writing I'll let you know. I was surprised a little by it.

wo wo wooooooo!

Do you own a home in Ohio TF? Because I thought you had to be a homeowner or at least live in the state to have to pay school taxes. This seems odd to me. I might get a second opinion from another accountant if I were you.

I spoke with a lady from the Department of Taxation myself. I explained to her that I'm in the military and I live out of state and don't own any land there either.

She said she was sorry, but it doesn't matter. I asked her for the tax comissioners email address so I could send him and the govenor and email and express my displeasure, but all she gave me was an address. I probably won't write a letter. I was just po'd at the time. I did let the tax lady that I wasn't mad at her and that I understood she was just doing her job.

I've talked to lobbyists from the state capital and they say nothing gets a politician's attention more than a hand written letter.

Send it certified so he has to get it. Otherwise it'll probably be filed with the rest with no evidence you even sent one.

...Texas, Oklahoma, Nevada and Alaska do not have any state taxes as well as Florida.

Good luck.

I was wondering about Alaska. Now that would be the one to go for! You could do some real hunting there. If you are a resident of Alaska you don't need to hire a guide if you want to hunt big game. Although I don't know if Id like to get lost in AK. Plus it is a long ways off. Now if I were in the Service I think I could finagle a trip somehow.

My brother lives in Texas and I thought about changing it there too, but it's too far away. Besides as long as I'm on active duty I can get tags and liscenses at the resident rate so there's really no need for it. :D
