Terrorizing Turkey Caught On Tape
Feathered 'Friend' Chases Troopers

POSTED: 11:07 pm EST February 17, 2005
UPDATED: 12:07 am EST February 18, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers aren't talking turkey in Hancock County, they're running from one, NBC 4 reported.

At one point, a trooper was even held hostage in his own cruiser by a bird that was a little too curious.

So exactly what is it about a man in uniform that the turkey finds so fascinating?

One of the feathery incidents started -- as so many run-ins with the law do -- as a routine traffic stop. As a trooper was talking to a driver he pulled over, a turkey came out of a local field and walked up to the vehicle and stood next to the trooper.

The officer tried to walk around the car, but the turkey followed … all the way back to his cruiser.

The trooper received no sympathy from his partner.

"It's chasing me around," the trooper said while laughing. "I can't get out of the car without it following me."

"That's a big bird," his partner said. "I think he likes you."

Two days later, a man called for help because a turkey had cornered him in his vehicle.

Another trooper got out of his car to make sure the way was clear, but the turkey chased him back to his cruiser. The man who had called for help started taking pictures of the amusing scene.

The trooper was held hostage in his cruiser for 20 minutes while the turkey circled the vehicle and even got onto the hood. After some fancy pecking at the paint job, the turkey eventually got back on solid ground.

A wildlife officer had to assist the officers by trapping the turkey and taking him to a more welcoming territory.

The wierd thing is that's the place I park when I hunt across the road. If the car was facing the other way you could see the area I hunt. It's on the corner of c.r. 236 and c.r. 139 in Hancock County.

Guys, we have a celebrity here. The officer that took the still photo was just here getting the web address that shows the taping of it all. Said he's glad he wasn't first on scene. The bad thing is the officer it happened to is about to retire, so after a life of public service, that will be his 15 minutes of fame.

Wildlife officials terminate turkey tale

By J. STEVEN DILLON

Staff Writer

McComb's famous fowl is finis.

A "wild" turkey who got the attention of local state troopers -- and the news media -- has been euthanized, according to a spokesman for the local wildlife office.

Tim Plageman, wildlife management supervisor for Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, said Tuesday that a wildlife officer destroyed the animal late last Friday.

Plageman said the decision was made to kill the bird because it was felt that the turkey was pen-raised, and may have been carrying disease that could harm the local wild turkey population.

"Based on its behavior we felt it was not a wild turkey and posed a risk to the wild turkey population in this area," Plageman said.

He said there were also concerns raised by the state patrol that the turkey was creating a traffic hazard.

The turkey made headlines and newscasts last week after it aggressively chased after two state troopers near the MCI tower on Portage Township Road 97, several miles southeast of McComb. In the second incident, the bird even jumped up on top of one trooper's cruiser.

Television news programs around the country broadcast video of the brash bird, filmed from the dashboard cameras of the troopers' cruisers.

Two Wood County residents laid claim to the turkey late last week after reading about the bizarre-acting tom, and one woman from North Baltimore expressed interest in having the tom returned to her farm, where she said she had raised it as a pet before it disappeared in December.

She was unable to track down the turkey, however, before ODNR killed it.

"We're all sad around here. I'm disappointed I didn't get a chance to see if he was mine," Mary Shepherd said Tuesday. "I would have known because it had a certain marking on its foot."

Plageman said many people raise turkeys and then release them, which is not a good idea, and actually illegal under Ohio law, because domestic turkeys, which often resemble wild ones, can spread disease including "blackhead" to wild turkeys.

"We don't know if this one was diseased or not, but we have an obligation to protect the existing wild turkey population," he said.

Local wildlife officers have occasionally released young wild turkeys to rural areas in an effort to re-introduce the animal to Hancock County.

Plageman said Tuesday there was no accurate information available as to how many wild turkeys are currently living here.
