Sun River Ranch, located on the Sun River 30 miles southwest of Great Falls, Montana, is adjacent to the Lewis & Clark National Forest and the Continental Divide - and is owned by Dr. and Mrs. Jay Tischendorf. The property consists of woodlands, mostly cottonwood trees, and prairie. It occupies 85 acres with almost 1/2-mile of river frontage. The clarity of the river water is outstanding, and offers some of the best trout fishing on the east side of the Rocky Mountains.

On the property are three storage sheds and a mobile home on a concrete foundation. Across the river is the Broken-O-Ranch of 150,000 acres. Within two miles of the Sun River Ranch there are both bald and gold eagles, as well as ospreys nesting, and at least three hawks nests are visible on the property. There is a rounded cliff that was used by Indians as a buffalo jump. Teepee rings are visible near here, as well as on the ranch proper.

Renowned Montana fisherman Mark Tischendorf, brother of the equally esteemed Jay, refers to the trout fishing on the Sun River as "awesome..." Not so very long ago, the Tischendorf brothers, as the sons of Kent's Joyce and Terry Wiland, developed and honed their newfound affinity and appreciation of the outdoors along the banks of the Cuyahoga near Breakneck Creek and nearby Twin Lakes.

After the brothers eventually graduated from Kent Roosevelt High School - Mark in 1979 and Jay in '80 - they both headed further into the eventual apex of the American outdoors world. Jay's resume alone provides a daunting overview: Graduation from Ohio University in 1984 with a degree in biology/zoology, internship at Hawk Mtn. Sanctuary in Pa., monitoring active eagle nests in Arizona and peregrine falcons in Idaho and Yellowstone; twice performing wolf studies in Minnesota; two stints tracking cougars at Yellowstone; recording hawk migration in upstate New York; releasing red wolves into the wilds of North Carolina; and monitoring raptor nests in Wyoming, just for a start.

Nowadays Jay lives at the aforementioned locale with wife Jacquie, just a Big Sky stone's throw from Mark and wife Vickie - introduced by Jay on a fateful visit by Mark to the area some time ago, prior to the couple prospering in the concessions business in and around Yellowstone. Mark spends whatever free time he might accrue enhancing his status as one of that area's most renowned trout fly anglers. Jay can most often be found tending to his veterinary duties between trips into the wild for various
state and federal agencies to consult and advise in a variety of areas concerning wildlife, conservancy, and research. Clearly, these two local boys have grown into men of regard in their
respective fields by nurturing and cultivating a profound love and
appreciation of the great outdoors initially fostered and enhanced right in this area, and further encouraged by - among others - their late mother Joyce and father Jerry Wiland, whose assistance with this story was most appreciated.

Jay told me by phone how much he'd enjoy returning home to do our local sports show, perhaps meeting old friends while setting them up near his new home for a guided pursuit of mountain lions. I couldn't competently express to him and his brother Mark just how welcome they'd be.
