Brad Jerman of Springboro, Ohio lost an inch when the antlers of his huge Warren County white-tailed deer were scored last week by a panel of experts, but he narrowly kept a share of the record for Ohio's biggest typical buck.
After a 60-day period to allow the antlers to dry, a panel of six experts from the Buckeye Big Buck Club scored the antlers at 201 inches. It was originally "green scored" at 202 inches by Buckeye Big Buck Club President Gary Trent shortly after Jerman killed the deer with his crossbow on Nov. 10.
The deer matched the Ohio record for typical antlers, a buck killed by William Kontras in Clark County in 1986.
Trent originally scored the antlers as having 10 points. The panel ruled a small tine on the antlers was also a point, giving the deer an 11-point set of antlers, which was not a good thing for Jerman, 40, a manager at Lexus-Nexus. The tine was ruled a fault and caused a one-inch deduction in the final score.
The Jerman buck will be submitted to the Boone and Crockett record book and the typical antlers would be the 10th largest in Boone and Crockett history. It is the largest typical buck ever taken with a crossbow.
Jerman will show off his trophy buck at the Cincinnati Hunting and Fishing Show on Saturday and Sunday. There is already a Web site for the buck www.jermanbuck.com .
Castalia trout lottery:
Some of the best trout fishing in Ohio can be found on the grounds of the Ohio Division of Wildlife's Castalia Fish Hatchery in Erie County, just southwest of Sandusky, but it's difficult to get a pass to go fishing there. One way to do it is to win the lottery for a spot in the Castalia hatchery's special fishing days or its youth and adult beginning fly fishing clinics.
The deadline is March 1 to apply for the regular Castalia fishing events, which are April 4-June 3 and Aug. 22-Oct. 28 for adults and June 6-Aug. 19 for kids 16 and under. Send a $3 nonrefundable fee and a form that can only be downloaded at www.ohiodnr.com.
The adult beginning fly fishing clinic lottery is for 135 anglers and the youth event is limited to 15 kids who are 15 and younger. To enter the lotteries, send a post card. The adult sessions are Fridays from April 29-June 3 with an April 1 deadline to enter. The youth clinics are on June 10 with a May 1 application deadline.
Adults must send a postcard to: ODNR Division of Wildlife District Two, 952 Lima Ave., Findlay, Ohio, 45840, Attention: Linda Keesecker. The adult lottery winners are allowed to bring along one guest. Applicants must include name, address and phone number and the name of the guest.
Youth postcards must include name, age, address and telephone number and also be sent to the ODNR's Findlay office, but directed to the attention of the Youth Fly Fishing Clinic. Youth anglers must be accompanied by a non-fishing adult. Each youngster will be given a fly rod and reel combo provided by The Clear Fork Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Haymond in charge:
George Haymond is manning his usual post behind the counter at Anglersmail, the Parma Heights fly fishing shop, but with a major change. Haymond is the new owner of Ohio's oldest fly fishing store with the retirement of Dave Weisenberger.
Steelhead news:
The Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with a record 301 members, including founding members Frank Simoncic, Jeff Liskay and Reggie Ostrowski. . . . A noted area guide, Liskay and Chuck Ashcroft of Grand River Partners are featured at the OCBS meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 at The Firehouse in Willoughby Hills. . . . Erie Outfitters and The Golden Hackle Fly Shop in Sheffield Lake has a Big Fish Contest for steelheaders again this winter and trophy trout can be checked through April 30.
Out and about:
The National Rifle Association's Great American Hunters Tour will make a stop at the Cleveland Sport, Travel and Outdoor Show at the I-X Center, March 12-20. . . . The Turn-In-A-Poacher program rewarded 21 people with $2,835 for calling the 1-800-POACHER hot line with tips that helped convict 33 people for violating wildlife laws.
