Did ya' ever wonder why the state allows animals to be pursued by using farm machinery ?? I would have to say that probably all of us have heard stories of people shooting their fill of birds and rabbits and maybe even a deer or two from atop a tractor or combine while in use in the field. (but don't let the headlamp beams of the tractors be used to spotlight :p ) But seriously-what gives ? Why do you think this is allowed to happen ?

The state doesn't allow it. I know someone who was cited and fined for shooting rabbits off a combine. But as you said, we've all heard the stories

If you look at page 21 of the 2004-05 hunting regulations it states-All hunting from motor vehicles, except boats and machinery being used in farm operations is prohibited.
Looks to me like the person you know could've fought that one as I've gone to my county game warden and he was not aware of it being in the book.
The way I read it -"All hunting from motor vehicles,EXCEPT boats and machinery being used in farm operations is prohibited." seems to mean that it is just as legal to hunt from a tractor as it is from a boat !!!
Not that I would ever do it but that is my point-why is it allowed ??

I didn't think hunting from a boat was allowed. I thought the regs read that no hunting is allowed from ANY motorized vehicle regardless of function? I woudn't hunt from a vehicle or a boat anyway. I guess that's why I never looked it up.

I know several farmers that leave a corn feild to harvest during deer gunseason because it is legal to hunt off the combine.

I hunt pheasants from the corn picker wagon ,my lab even has learned to ride so he can fetch.
He would rather pheasant hunt than eat .

When I was in high school most of the farmer kids carried a shot gun to shoot rabbits.

I know with boats you have to shut the motor off before you shoot. Maybe its the same with farm equipment. They probably let the farmers do it to get a little payback.

This sounds like one of those "legal but ethical ?" feature stories that Field and Stream magazine used to run. Each month they would feature a situation which,by definition, was legal under the
particular state's game laws but in the eyes of the sportsman was it really ethical ?
