For what your going to pay for a two or three day hunt you could come down to South Carolina and hunt for a week and kill as many hogs as you'd like. Then again your chances of success are probably better on the ranch. I heard the refuge wasn't that good this year.
TF
if i had some vacation time i would probably do that thunder.but since i dont have too stick around here.

What are we looking at $$$? I tried to find their website, could not find it. Shooting a hog is something i've always wanted to do. Can you use a handgun? Are they good to eat?

Man, what a meat hunt at that ranch in TX. A bison and 2 hogs for $900, if you got lucky you would definately be in the meat. I never thought i'd say this, but I wish TX was closer :) . I wonder what they would charge you to skin and quarter your animals?

Nope, Have you ever heard of fair chase? That means no fences. I bet the Double D is alot smaller than that. However the term "Double D", makes me think that it is really big! Get it?? Or is it just my dirty mind?

Well, the way I see it, you take it for what it is...a canned hunt. I would shoot a hog or bison in a fenced enclosure for the meat, whats the difference between that and buying a chicken at the store...nothing except the person doing the killing? IMO, to each his own. Now if a guy brags about what a great hunter he is, thats a differn't story. I would love to shoot a 800lb buffalo and come out of there with 400lbs of meat and a tanned hide, just my .02.

01-19-2005, 04:30 PM
Well, If you are only doing it for the meat, then would't it be a lot cheaper and faster to go to the store and buy some meat that was already in styrofoam packs?
If you say you are doing it for a kind of meat you can't get at the store, that just don't fly either. When is the last time you heard someone say" Man, I wish I had a zebra steak?

I hunt military bases that are enclosed by a fence. I can assure you that it isn't easy and not like shooting fish in a barrel.

Actually, buffalo meat in the store is a lot more expensive than if you shot one at the ranch. There are differn't levels of sportmanship in hunting. What some say is acceptable, others may find deplorable. Like shooting a 2lb rabbit with a 12ga, for example, or a 90lb bear sitting there eating a jelly donut and shot with a high powered rifle, Its all good as far as i'm concerned. I mean, its crazy, some guys think using a compound bow is not sporting!! We gotta stick together

What does it cost to buther a buffalo? Add that to the price.
Forty square miles is alot but, a it can't leave if it wants to.

Im not sure, I do all my own butchering. Why would a deer leave the military base, they are pretty safe there from what I hear. :D sorry TF, I couldn't resist.

40 square miles would be an area about 6.25 miles X 6.25 miles. I know deer have been documented to wander alot further than that during the rut. And, they call whitetails homebodys because they live in a relativly small area compared to other animals.
BRIAN the hog meat is really good. as far as im concerned a can hunt is goin too wal mart ,krogers or aldi and gettin your meats with all the preservitives and additives and whatever else they put in the stuff.plus i enjoy huntin whether it in a fenced in area or in fair chase meat in the freezer is meat in the freezer.i agree what ya said what makes it fair chase huntin a rabbit with a 12 gauge or a deer with a 300 mag or any high powered rifle for that matter.sure it easy huntin with big ole guns but too each there own. me ill stck with archery equipment.yea ya can use a hand gun but im takin recurve this time too get me a hog now that goin too be a blast.

I'm going to the dd ranch on the 27th of jan. there are 4 or 5 of us going. We are hoping to shoot 1 bison, 1 bull elk, 1 fallow deer, and 1or 2 hogs or maybe a red stag instead of the fallow. I,ll let you know how it turns out for us. good luck with the hogs.
Any idea how many trucks we'll need to haul all this back?
good luck too ya trailbologna. sounds like better take a semi with ya too haul all that meat back.

Actaully I stand corrected. The deer could swim across the New River over to Camp Lejune. Camp Lejune is fenced too, but then they could swim out to sea. If the current's were just right they could end up in either New Jersey, Florida or Spain.

we should call it" unfair chase season"then, because using any tool whether its a gun, bow, knife, spear, club or rock is an unfair advantage over an animal that cannot.

BOO IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE THEN YOU WOULD NOT UNDER STAND IF I TOLD YOU
Try me i'm a understanding kinda of guy.
TF the size is 100 acres.
Can someone explain to me what the difference is between 100 acre fenced in area compared to a 10 acres lot that has been "baited" for a year with food plots and feeder hanging every where spraying corn every hour and brown sugar spreed all over the ground to keep the deer coming back to an area when food source becomes hard to find, you are providing a hand out for the deer ,That to me is like handing a drunk a beer but telling him he can't drink it just hold the can????????????
I used to think alot like you guys until i tried it and it not as easy as you all put it i used to think it was like shooting a pig in a farmers pin,but you still have to get within that shoot range with (archery equipment),they are still wild and believe me they will beat you at that game if your not on top of yours.,Now i guess if you went in there with a rifle that would be a differnent story but hunting deer with a rifle at 300 yards is kinda cheating to "right".
Now i will only go after game on these ranches that i can not get here in the United state(Wild),I personaly like alot of the exotic animals and i just can't see my self going over to Africa or south Africa or any other place over there to hunt in these crazy countries, plus i like my soil here and these are the only place you can get some of these animals,So think of me as you will but i will be heading back down in Oct this year for another exotic animal.
So my challenage you ,you great america (wild only hunters)To come join me and lets see if you did not enjoy and have a good time and i will guarentee you will have blisters on you feet and you will enjoy the hunt.So step up loud mouth and lets go hunting,If not i will go without you and have a good time.
SO who's going sissies:D (archery equipment only)
Man of love this site(Way to go Steve)
Boo I've been a hunter all my life. I guess it comes down to my remembering The Guns of Autumn broadcast years ago on CBS. I still remember the animal coming out of the cage into a small corral and being blasted, several times! Be it 40' X 40' or 100 acres X 100 acres it is still a box. I guess it's the size of the box you can live with. I can't!
well said CARIBOU. im with ya ill go back down and hunt with ya this comin october.okay ya all say huntin a fenced in area is easy like caribou said come on down and see for your self. bring your archery equipment .i guess if ya callin it a canned hunt anyone that goes too KROGERS or ALDIS or WALMART or anywhere else that sells meats is a HUNTER. the place is 200 hundred acres and like CARIBOU said when your done chasin the with archery equipment youll have blisters on your feet.me i could care less what ya all think of it as long as i go too my freezer and it full of deer elk or hog i know ive done my thing too make sure i have food for my family. but like ive always been told OPINIONS ARE LIKE A$$holes everyone has one.but too you who dont think it is not right i accept your opinion.but oo me it was one awsome hunt and cant wait too do it agin. me im goin back for more wild boar in march so anyone that wants too join me with archery equipment come on down you will have a great time.

You say these animals are wild? So, are they captured live on the plains of Africa and brought to the game farm? Or, in the case of the elk and pigs, they are captured from the wild here in the U.S. and turned loose in that pen? Inquiring minds must know!
Caribou, Just for the record I have never baited a deer.
Q2 I never said any thing about "easy". It's about ethics! And you right about opinions too. Some just stink more than others though! To each his own but fenched in canned hunt will do more to top hunting than the ARA ever will!
but what about the people that put up feeders and stuff for animals they set the timer so that the feeders go off when there goin too be huntin .now that too me sounds unfair.
Arrow 1
01-23-2005, 09:00 AM
You are right Q2Xl. For most hunting situations it is unfair to hunt over a feeder or bait.
The only time I would agree that baiting is fair is for black bear hunting in Ontario, Canada and places similar to that. And the reason I say that is ,it would be impossible to hunt them any other way in that type of country with the black bears habits of roaming.
Wild hogs may fall into that catagory too. I have never hunted them so I can't say for sure.
I'm still waiting to hear from someone here about how these so called "wild'" animals are obtained that are turned loose in these pens.

I would guess only the person running the ranch will know that answer to your question as to where these animals come from and i can almost bet they will not tell you.
I would guess from another bigger ranch but in not really sure,I do know that most of the russian hogs come out of canada though.

Caribou, stated that these animals were indeed "wild" . Since he seemed to know I was hoping he could tell me exactly where and how they were captured. As far as I know it is illegal to capture and sell a wild animal here in the U.S.
I have a hunch these so called wild animals are are raised in captivity like a cow or a sheep. Then sold to the game farm where they are released and shot in the pen.

Boo I too agree with your statement on feeders and timers. While I have hunted over a corn pile late in Jan. at times I look at it like hunting over a scented man made scrape. So will say I am spliting hairs and that is fine. It sure is not a feeder with a timer. What is a treasure to one is trash to others.
