I have no life. Besides it's closer than 282 days until I go elk hunting.

I'll be bowhunting in Idaho. The tags are over the counter.

Buckmaster,

It's a combination of public and private land.

I'm going with a friend and his brother-in-law. We'll be staying in his brother-in-laws cabin.

From what I understand they usually do pretty good too. We'll be hunting for 11 to 14 days. If I'm fortunate to kill an elk then I may purchase a deer tag too. I don't think this is a super area for record book class elk, but he said they have a few biggens running around. It doesn't matter to me because I'm going to shoot the first elk I have a chance at. I'd like to say that I'd pass on a spike or small bull, but in the heat of the moment anything is possible. :D

My friend is just getting into bow hunting, but his brother-in-law has been bow hunting elk and mule deer for most of his life.

With tags, liscense, airfare, food, and extras the trip shouldn't run much over $1,500.00.

This has been a dream for some time and I can't believe it's actually looking like I can go. Usually I'm too broke or deployed overseas.

Sounds fun. If you can do it for $ 1500 you better go.
I'm working on an old, retired customer of mine in the Montrose area of CO. Perhaps an 06 event on CO public land.

Hey TF you better drive out there, how are you gonna fit 300+ lbs of meat and a big ole 6x6 rack in your luggage?

That's actually a concern of mine. "IF" I was lucky enough to shoot a biggen then I may rent a truck and drive back. I have to check with the airlines to find out what they have to say.

You dont realize how BIG even a small elk is, the skin and cape is about 100lbs. I've brought back coolers full of fish from Fla. on an airplane, but you will have too much other gear for that. It would definately be a problem for you if you score, but what a NICE problem. :)

I was doing some figuring and realized that if I was too shoot a biggen it would cost just as much to ship it back as it would to rent a car and drive back.

If the cost is the same to ship as it is to rent and drive back then why would you deal with the hassle. Pay some else to ship it to you and then all you got to do is take it to the taxidermist or have it shipped there. Though, I would want to get my hands on it and make sure all is right before it goes to the taxidermist. Make sure they didn't pull a switch or anything. Sounds like a great time and it should be an awesome hunt!

Yeah, if I get a biggen I'll probably ship some stuff back.

The only way I'm going to mount an elk is if it's a book class animal. I just don't have the room in my home for it. I will do a Euro mount if the rack looks good.

This is all assuming the good Lord blesses me. :D
