Jim,
your craft will be fine for the inner bay-remember it's about 2x7 miles but relatively secluded from the lakewinds. You can launch at the state park.
I used to drive up there with a 12' v Alumacraft in the back of my pickup and had some great days.
Let me know if If we can help with any other info when you're ready to go-

Jim:
I grew up in Erie within walking distance of Presque Isle, and I parctically lived there fishing and duck hunting. The ice fishing is best at the head ofthe bay at the foot of Sommerheim Drive, and at Horseshoe Pond (where the houseboats are), and at Misery Bay. Depending on the cold, some of the ponds in the lagoons are good, especially Grave Yard Pond and Long Pond. The best spots on Long Pond are best accessable by narrow fox trails that run between the East/West Pier parking lots and Misery Bay. You can't see them on maps of the peninsula, but they are there.
There are other larger more accesible trails theat lead to the interior of the peninsula as well, and the Sidewalk Trail completely bisects the center of the peninsula between Misery Bay and the Lighthouse.
As for open water fishing, perch and smallmouth bass are best off Gull Point, and pike, muskie, largemouth, crappies, bluegill and catfish can be found throughout the peninsula, Lake Erie, and the bay.
Te fishery at Presque Isle is awesome, and makes northeast Ohio disappointing. Sitting here writing this makes me want to go back, and I think I will in the spring. Please let me know how it works out for you.
Good fishin'!

You can find a good map online at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/findamap.aspx, and the DCNR website has more information on all the PA state parks than you'll ever need to know.
Also, you can contact the park office for paper maps and anything else at the following:
Presque Isle State Park, P.O. Box 8510 , Erie, PA, 16505-0510, Phone: 814-833-7424, presqueisle@dcnr.state.pa.us
For fishing license information, if you don't already know, just go to http://www.fish.state.pa.us/ and order online.
Hope this helps.

Jim and chopiq:
Glad you can use the info. Presque Isle is a great place, and I love it. I hope you do well.
Jack:
I'm originally from Erie, and after I got married, my wife and I moved to Ohio in 1995 and settled in Cuyahoga Falls, and love it here. She started working after she got her Master's degree, and basically supported me while I went to school to get mine. The rest is history, so enough of the potential for a really long story. Basically, I hunted and fished in Pennsylvanbia as much as I could, not always successfully, but it's in the doing that counts. I resumed my hunting and fishing in Ohio a few years ago, and as far as hunting goes, I had a great 2004. Fishing, though, has been disappointing. Perhaps I'm too used to PA, or I just don't know where to go or how to fish around NE OH without a boat. Any pointers anyone could provide me would be greatly appreciated. After all, catching sunnies in the Cuyahoga River or at metro parks ponds with my daughters is a lot of fun, but when I'm by myself, I'd like something a little bigger/better. Your thoughts?
(I guess this wound up being a long story after all!)

Duffy,
not overlong at all...reliable info is hard to find.I find this site refreshing and attractive compared to some of the others, which are essentially the same half-dozen "outdoorsmen"posting over and over to one another about anything but the outdoors.
I hope this site doesn't mind you checking out the "articles" section of our site,I see that you're registered. You'll also note the area shows we'll be at .Stop by and say hi,i'm bettin'I can put you and the girls on some more interesting fish than "sunnies",right near your home. Many of our videos and tv shows so far have been filmed you-know-where.
best,
jk
