I was out on the edge of an alfalfa field this morning, looking to fill a doe tag. Just when I thought all of the deer had been shot or had changed their travel patterns, here they come.
There is an open gate crossing between two fields. The farmer told me a buck "comes by at 8:30 in the morning and then again at 5:30. He won't go down in where your stand is 'tho". Since the farmer has showed me this, I've seen the buck a dozen times. This morning, the buck came to the gate to look over the pasture at about 8:20. Since I have filled my buck tag I thought "I'm gonna screw with this guy". I grunted. He just about turned inside out to get away from the grunt sound. I thought "He sure is spooked". Just then, about 30 yards away, a massive (body and rack) 8 point steps out of the woods behind me. This guy then races to the edge of the pasture just out of my line of sight. He chases six doe and a small spike buck back through the pasture well out of range of my bow and doe tags. I spent another hour waiting for a doe to show, but nothing came by. As I was leaving that stand, I bumped at least five more deer on the way out. I think the big buck is why the smaller buck won't come near my stand. But then, the spike was willing to try his luck with the ladies. Maybe the smaller buck has been taught a lesson in more ways than one. I got one more chance at this spot before muzzle loading season. I need to rid the farmer of some doe...
